Out & About in October
Hello everyone,

As we all look longingly to the skies for rain, let’s still plan to be out and about this month enjoying our fabulous Fall in Marin, as well as local activities to support our healthy aging. This month our Age Friendly Marin Forum will feature updates and choices for Medicare given it’s open enrollment time! Also, we’re offering a 2-part zoom class on using iPhones in collaboration with our wonderful Fairfax library. And planning is underway for our annual Celebration for all our residents who are 90+ years old! We’ll be delivering beautiful baskets full of goodies as well as certificates in mid-November so please connect with us if you or someone you know and love falls into this special category, born in 1931 or earlier. And finally, have you ever wondered just who is behind Age Friendly Fairfax? See our new group photo below, also featured in the newest Fairfax Recreation Catalog which you should have received in the mail. Be well and stay safe.

“Looking back, lessons learned, and looking forward: the impact of the pandemic, fires, and social unrest on California’s older adults.” The past two years have been difficult. Sheltering in place, power outages, and wildfires have affected all of society but have disproportionately impacted older adults. During these unprecedented times, people and organizations have come together to share best practices and expand their services to meet shifting needs and priorities. This presentation will feature speakers from the state and community level who will share how services and policies for older adults have been reshaped as a result of recent emergencies. Presenters: Richard Figueroa, Deputy Cabinet Secretary, Office of Governor Gavin Newsom; Adriana Rabkin, Director, Marin VOAD; and Nancy Geiss, Chief Operating Officer, Vivalon.

The project will collect stories from older Californians in the form of audio and video recordings, oral histories, written histories and photographs. It is a project of the State Library which has partnered with the California Department of Aging and our Fairfax librarians are available to assist you in being part of this project. Call the library or stop at the desk to find out more.

Intergenerational Storytelling to Accelerate Climate Action! Would you be interested in a monthly event at the library organized by the Age Friendly Fairfax Task Force? Such an event is in the discussion phase… an open-mic gathering where participants would have 5 minutes to share inspiring action you or others are doing, locally or internationally, to address climate change—the highest priority concern of older adults in Marin (according to the Marin County Area Plan 2020-2024). If you’d like to share your thoughts or be involved, email jodytimms@comcast.net
