Ageism Awareness Day: October 9

Ageism refers to stereotypes (how we think), prejudice (how we feel), and discrimination (how we act) toward others or ourselves based on age. It negatively impacts our health and well-being, our financial security, and the economy. It exists in many forms, influencing everything from personal interactions to public policy, and impacts us at every age.

The good news is that we can do something about it, and we begin by spreading the word on Ageism Awareness Day Oct. 9, 2024. Ageism Awareness Day is an opportunity to draw attention to the impact of ageism in our society and how we can reframe aging in our communities.

Here are the top priorities for 2024:

  • Encourage more people to take a public stand on ageism
  • Encourage new communities & organizations to recognize Ageism Awareness Day
  • Flood the internet & media with pro-age related content

Request for Volunteers

The NC Association of Regional Councils of Government, NC County Commissioners Association, NC League of Municipalities and NC City & County Management Association is hosting "Office Hours" to support managers and administrators affected by Hurricane Helene beginning on Thursday, October 3 at 1:30 pm.

These calls are to provide managers and administrators whose communities have been impacted by Hurricane Helene an opportunity to ask questions, obtain information and information about resources from experienced managers and other state partners as they respond and recover from this unprecedented disaster.

We are currently asking for any managers, deputy or assistant managers who have experience in disaster recovery to volunteer to serve as a resource during these office hours to share from your experiences and to provide guidance to your colleagues in Western NC. If you are willing to volunteer to assist, please respond to the following link as soon as possible:

Triangle Travel Survey is Underway This Fall - Your Input Matters!

The North Carolina Department of Transportation, GoTriangle, the Capital Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (CAMPO), and the Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization (DCHC-MPO) have launched an important survey of how people travel across the Triangle region. Randomly selected households across Durham, Johnston, Orange, Wake, and portions of Alamance, Chatham, Franklin, Granville, Harnett, Nash, and Person counties will be invited to participate by mailed invitation from September – October of this year. Invited households have the option to complete the survey online, by phone, or through a smartphone app developed by the project consultants, RSG. If invited, please participate and do your part in helping our region.

October is Residents' Rights Month

Residents' Rights Month is an annual event to honor residents living in long-term care facilities and those receiving care in their home or community. It's an opportunity to focus on and celebrate the dignity and rights of every individual receiving long-term services and supports. Residents have the right to self-determination and to use their voice to make their own choices.

This year's Residents' Rights Month theme, "The Power of My Voice," emphasizes self-empowerment and recognizes the power of residents being vocal about their interests, personal growth, and right to live full, enriching lives.

Join us in October to support and help promote community awareness about the importance of Residents' Rights. Everyone has a voice and together we can make a difference.
