Erik's Family Finds Hope

A journey from crisis to stability

Photograph of Erik

When Erik and his family returned to Colorado to care for ailing relatives, life quickly grew overwhelming. After his mother-in-law suffered a stroke, his wife became her full-time caregiver, leaving Erik to support their two young children, including a son with autism; while juggling work and home responsibilities.

In early 2025, his son’s Medicaid waiver was cut, forcing them to pay hundreds of dollars for therapy sessions out-of-pocket. Their savings drained quickly, and Erik’s missed work added to the financial strain.

By July, they were three months behind on rent, utilities were overdue, and their Colorado Child Care Assistance Program assistance was frozen, making day care unaffordable. On July 2, Erik appeared in eviction court and was given until mid-July to pay or move out. “I didn’t know what we were going to do,” he said.

Through the 211 help line, Erik was referred to Catholic Charities Castle Rock. Meeting Mandy, a case manager, gave him both practical support and emotional relief. “She helped me stand up and fight,” he said. “She reminded me I wasn’t alone.”

Catholic Charities and community partners helped him avoid eviction, catch up on bills, and stabilize his home. With consistent support, Erik kept his job, restored his son’s Medicaid coverage, and began rebuilding his family’s stability.

Today, his mother-in-law is recovering, his son is thriving in kindergarten, and his daughter is doing well in pre-K. Erik continues to work full time and is setting goals to regain financial independence and eventually finish his degree.

“My biggest goal is to give my kids what I didn’t have—a stable home and a safe place to grow,” he said. “I’ll fight to my dying breath to make sure they’re safe and cared for.”

Catholic Charities has welcomed 20 families to the beautiful apartments at Hunt Family Housing. These apartments are designed to provide safe and supportive housing for families experiencing homelessness.

These apartments give families the gift of stability and peace during the holidays and beyond. Staff has already hosted several events to begin building community among the residents.

More than just housing, Hunt Family Housing offers wrap-around services right on campus. Families have access to case management, counseling, and additional nonprofit support through Catholic Charities and partner agencies located in the Annex on the property.

"For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.

And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine,

you did for me.'"
