Get to know Dani Segelbaum

Dani is one of eight literary agents coming to the 2020 MWW Agent Fest, March 13-14 at the Ball State Alumni Center, Muncie, Indiana.

Born and raised in Minneapolis, Dani is a graduate of Boston University's College of Communication where she studied journalism and political science. She has been a voracious reader for as long as she can remember. Dani began her publishing career as an editorial assistant at HarperCollins Publishers, focusing primarily on highly designed non-fiction titles. She currently works as a junior literary agent, reading queries and assisting clients to achieve their best work. She currently lives in New York City.

Dani's Wish List:
Dani hopes to work with authors from diverse backgrounds to tell stories that are important to them. Her typical preferences include contemporary fiction, memoir, narrative non-fiction, women's fiction, historical fiction, popular culture, lifestyle, and cookbooks. She believes passion and hard work are the fundamentals to success.

MWW agent assistant Brache James, a creative writing senior at Ball State University, interviewed Dani about her time as an editor, writer, and agent and her feelings about the upcoming MWW Agent Fest.

MWW: What is the most exciting part about working with a new author on an accepted project?
Dani: I love working with new authors! They are so enthusiastic about their work and it is often such a collaborative experience for both of us. Guiding a debut author through the entire publishing process from start to finish is one the best parts about my job.

MWW: What is some advice you could give to a writer on approaching an event like this? What would you encourage them to think about or keep in mind?
Dani: Do your research and come with questions! We are here to help answer them. The publishing industry is very confusing, and we want to help make it easy to understand. Make the most of your time here.

MWW: What does a day as a "literary agent" look like, and how does this impact the projects you prefer to take on?
Dani: Everyday is different. Some days are dedicated to reading queries or manuscripts. Some are dedicated to author relations and preparing for the book's publication. Others are meeting with clients and strategizing for the future. There is never a dull moment.

MWW: What do you value most about your experience with New Leaf Literary & Media?
Dani: I love that we are such a collaborative team. We really value each other's opinion. We all make a point to educate ourselves in all sorts of identities and experiences so we can best help our clients.
