Winter Spotlight

Reducing Barriers to Participation in Winter

As we move into the colder months, it is important to recognize the challenges winter brings, especially for older adults in our community. To address this, the Age-Friendly Calgary Steering Committee has made it a priority to reduce barriers that limit older adults' participation during the winter season.

The Centre on Aging is a proud member of the Age-Friendly Calgary Steering Committee, reflecting our commitment to improving age-friendliness both on our campus and throughout the wider community. The Steering Committee leads the implementation of Calgary’s Seniors Age-Friendly Strategy, with members representing government, non-profit, healthcare, post-secondary education, and private sectors, as well as Calgarians with lived experience.

As part of its efforts, the Centre co-sponsored a video titled "Connections in the Cold: Navigating the Challenges of Winter for Older Adults," which highlights the difficulties older adults may face during the winter months. Age-Friendly Calgary and the City of Calgary have also developed several resources to support older adults in preparing for winter.

We encourage you to watch the video and explore the resources below to help ensure that older community members stay safe and supported throughout this winter season.

Winter at UCalgary

As a reminder for those working on campus, the UCalgary Facilities team has made a commitment to have all primary walkways cleared of ice and snow by 8:30 am.

  • You can make snow removal requests for Calgary Transit controlled areas, such as the stairs at the University LRT station by calling 311.
  • To report slippery sidewalks that have not been cleared of snow on campus, call the Facilities Customer Care Centre at 403-220-7555, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 4:30 pm, or Campus Security after hours at 403-220-5333. You can also submit a service request online or email myfacilities@ucalgary.ca.
  • Remember to call Campus Security to report any near misses or injuries.

The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging is a cross-faculty aging hub whose mission is to create an ecosystem for innovation in age-inclusive environments, practices, and policies. We are focused on catalyzing networks and leading collaborative innovations centered on older adults through education, research, and community engagement. Our vision is to achieve optimal health and well-being for older adults driven by evidence and in an inclusive manner.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).
