Message from Our Academic Lead

As we enter the colder months, it is essential to consider the challenges that winter brings, especially for older adults in our community. At the Centre on Aging, we remain steadfast in our commitment to fostering age-friendly environments, and our involvement with the Age-Friendly Calgary Steering Committee exemplifies this dedication. The Steering Committee prioritized reducing barriers to older adults' participation in winter over 2023-24. We encourage you to watch the video and explore the resources they developed below!

In this edition of our newsletter, we also include the latest news about University of Calgary research and educational initiatives, which highlight critical issues affecting older adults.

Reducing Barriers to Participation in Winter

The Centre on Aging is a proud member of the Age-Friendly Calgary Steering Committee. The Steering Committee leads the implementation of Calgary’s Seniors Age-Friendly Strategy, with members representing government, non-profit, healthcare, post-secondary education, and private sectors, as well as Calgarians with lived experience.

As part of its efforts, the Centre co-sponsored a video titled "Connections in the Cold: Navigating the Challenges of Winter for Older Adults," which highlights the difficulties older adults may face during the winter months. Age-Friendly Calgary and the City of Calgary have also developed several resources to support older adults in preparing for winter. Click the links below to learn more and ensure our older community members are safe and supported throughout this winter season.

The Brenda Strafford Centre on Aging is a cross-faculty aging hub whose mission is to create an ecosystem for innovation in age-inclusive environments, practices, and policies. We are focused on catalyzing networks and leading collaborative innovations centered on older adults through education, research, and community engagement. Our vision is to achieve optimal health and well-being for older adults driven by evidence and in an inclusive manner.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The City of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation of Alberta (Districts 5 and 6).
