Every 10 years the US Census counts every person in the United States and U.S. territories. AgeOptions is pleased to be part of the 2020 Census and the important data that will be collected.

We’re joining with the other Area Agencies on Aging in Illinois to ensure the 2020 Census counts all older adults in the state by providing accurate Census information to our communities. We will help achieve Census goals by conducting webinars and sharing educational information throughout the first half of 2020.

We will be sending emails like this to keep you connected to our outreach efforts. Please use these resources and reach out to us for support.

Why Is the Census Important to Illinois and Your Community

  • The Census records how many people live in the state, where they live and statstics about the makeup of the population
  • States stand to gain or lose federal representatives based on the findings of the 2020 census
Reminders to Stay Protected

The Census Bureau will never ask for:
  • Your social security number
  • Donations or money
  • Your political affiliation
  • Your bank or credit card numbers
If you are asked these questions, it is not the 2020 Census.

Helpful Tips

This week, we are sharing helpful tips for starting or preparing for your Census outreach. You should:
  • Understand fully how the Census data is collected
  • Convey the message that the data collected during the census is confidential
  • Think about your main audience. What are barriers to them completing the 2020 Census and how can you address those (e.g., the older adults you serve don't have internet access, so you could explain how they could plan to respond by phone).
