Helping older adults remain independent, connected, and empowered to age well at home is at the heart of everything we do at Senior Resources.

This month, we're highlighting the people, programs, and resources that make that work possible.

From Options Counseling and caregiver support to healthy aging resources and the dedicated staff who serve our community, each story reflects our commitment to helping older adults live safely and confidently in the place they call home.

Staff Spotlight: Julian Silva SW

For Julian Silva, the most rewarding part of his work is building relationships with older adults and helping them remain independent.

Julian joined Senior Resources 18 months ago as a Supports Coordinator on the Initial Assessment Team. After earning his social work degree from Grand Valley State University, he discovered a passion for working with older adults during an internship at Mary Free Bed.

Alongside a registered nurse partner, Julian visits older adults and adults with disabilities in their homes to assess their needs, determine eligibility for services, and develop care plans that help them remain safely and independently in the home of their choice.

One reason Julian enjoys this work so much is the relationships he builds with the people he serves. Because his grandparents lived in Chile, he never had the opportunity to spend much time with them growing up.

"I've grown to love spending time with the older generation," Julian said. "They appreciate the company when we're there meeting with them and taking the time to have those social connections. It means a lot to them, but it means a lot to me too."

Outside of work, Julian enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching movies, and playing soccer. A lifelong player, he competes with Boolin FC in the MKG Footy League's Street Soccer program at Reese Park and was proud to have Senior Resources and his coworkers sponsor his team's jerseys this season.

His advice for anyone considering a career in aging services reflects the approach he brings to participants every day: "Have patience and take time to listen. Every person has a unique story, and meeting older adults where they are can make all the difference in helping them stay independent and feel supported."
