Increasing Cross-Sector Partnership Opportunities

and Improving Financial Acumen

There are more opportunities for aging and disability community-based organizations (CBOs) to participate in health care contracting because of the movement to value-based payment models and the new regulatory changes allowing Medicare Advantage plans to expand supplemental benefits. To build and sustain such partnerships, CBOs need to assess their current financial health and learn business knowledge and skills to grow and strengthen their service delivery capacity. To increase cross-sector partnership opportunities and improve financial acumen, the Aging and Disability Business Institute hosted two Financial Acumen Learning Collaboratives for CBOs in partnership with Collaborative Consulting. Read the resources that were developed from those collaboratives.

Developing CBO Contract Scopes of Work

A new resource guide and checklist provide recommendations on how to develop an effective scope of work, based on insights from health care organizations and community-based organizations (CBOs) with extensive cross-sector contracting experience. The primary audience for this brief these resources is health plans., However, though CBOs and other health care organizations including Accountable Care Organizations, clinically integrated networks, and others engaged in value-based payment arrangements or otherwise at risk for health care costs and outcomes can benefit from these resources.

New Findings on Planning and Care for Serious Illness

According to a new poll commissioned by The John A. Hartford Foundation (JAHF), planning and care for serious illness is unfamiliar to adults age 50+ but strongly desired once defined. What does this tell us? Clinicians must speak with their patients about what matters to them, especially planning for serious illness. And everyone needs to talk to family members. The poll, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago, is part of Age-Friendly Insights, a JAHF series measuring opinions on improving the care of older adults and support for family caregivers. Engaging Community Members:

A Guide to Equitable Compensation

Community members can contribute to various activities, such as conducting and participating in surveys, focus groups and forums and serving as members of advisory committees and boards. Building meaningful and fulfilling partnerships with community members, especially those living in marginalized communities, is critical as health care organizations work to address health care inequities. Organizations should compensate community members for their volunteer time and knowledge just as they would other professionals doing the similar work. The Center for Health Care Strategies published a brief to help develop and implement equitable compensation practices for community members. This brief offers guidance to health care organizations and includes examples from states and health care organizations.

Enhancing Support for Immigrant Direct Care Workers

A report published by PHI, Bridging The Gap, discusses the role that immigrant direct care workers play in the U.S. health care system, especially in long-term care for older adults and people with disabilities. The report includes a detailed overview of how immigrants have been a significant force in working with older adults and people with disabilities, comprising 27 percent of direct care workers. Additionally, the report outlines a range of ways to support immigrant workers, including providing work authorizations and pathways to citizenship to work in these sectors, supporting workforce innovations that recruit, retain, train and support immigrant direct care workers, strengthening immigrant-specific supports for these workers, and improving data collection and research to fully capture the realities of immigrant direct care workers.

Addressing Barriers to Health Care in Rural America

The National Institute for Health Care Management (NIHCM) Foundation published an infographic exploring rural health and health care access in the U.S., including the barriers to care and how telehealth services can improve health care access. These challenges contribute to poorer health outcomes and shorter life expectancies among the rural population compared to their urban counterparts.

Looking for data to boost your value proposition? The Business Institute's Evidence Bank houses a collection of research studies that CBOs can pull from to bolster their own pitches to health care entities.
