:: Five things you may not know about...how to organize your health information

Happy March Aglow Dermatology family!  There are signs the spring is coming...buds on the trees...and allergies.  In this issue we discuss a common skin condition many people mistake for dry skin or dry scalp.  And yes, this month's tip is again another reason to stop smoking- we can't say that enough!  We are excited to have an article from financial planner, Jeanne Brutman, who gives us tips about how to organize our health-related documents.  If you find you want nuggets of fascinating dermatology information every week, check out our new blog at www.dinastrachanmd.com/blog .  Last but not least- this month's Aesthetic special is AMAZING! The VI PEEL is on sale at 50% off.  Enjoy!
Dry is a lie-- you have a rash!
Seborrheic dermatitis- a common, but misunderstood condition

As a dermatologist, I see many people daily who complain of dry skin and scalp--especially in the winter.   Although it is true that dry skin, also known as xerosis, is more common in the cold winter months, not all flakes are dry skin.
Seborrheic dermatitis, a condition which includes dandruff, is a rash that generally occurs on the scalp, the T-zone of the face, as well as the ears, and sometimes the upper back, chest and armpits.  It may appear as dry flaky skin, with redness, flakes in the hair, discoloration, an itch or stinging sensation.  Unlike dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis generally doesn't respond to moisturizer.  It is much more common in the winter and with season change.
Luckily, this is a treatable condition.  Some people do well with over-the-counter dandruff shampoos and soaps with zinc pyrithione.  Sometimes prescription medication is needed.
If you have what you think is dry, sensitive skin on your face or scalp, consider getting evaluated by a board-certified dermatologist who can help you correctly identify and treat your condition.

Yet, another reason not to smoke:

smoking is like sunbathing in terms of how it ages your skin.

Five things you may not know about how to organize your health information:

Sometimes finding the right information,
just when you need it can be time saving,
if not life saving so here are a few tips on
what to keep handy to make your
 Health Care more stress free...

1.  Copies front and back of all medical
insurance cards (Health, Dental, Vision ,
FSA, etc...)

2.  Contact information for all medical
professionals you see on a regular basis
(GP, Dermatologist, Gyn, etc...)

3.  Copies of your medical History for the
last 10 years.  This can be requested from
each medical provider and stored so that
if you are seeking a second opinion or in a
medical emergency - you have instant
access to your files.

4.  Copies of all Health insurance plan
desciptions so that you can always use
your plans to your maximum benefit.  Also
the website, login and password codes of
health sites to get the latest information.

5.  Have signed HIPPA forms in the hands
of your Health Care Agent so that they can
access your medical records if you cannot
do it yourself in a medical emergency.  NY
