AgriSafe in Action - Fall 2018

New! AgriSafe Wildfire Resources

Due to the recent wildfires in the western United States, AgriSafe along with input from key partners created a unique resource Wildfire Health Threats- Risk Factors for Farmers and Ranchers. This resource includes common risk factors, prevention tips and related facts sheets.

To accompany this new resource, listen to the On-Demand webinar AgriSafe Think Tank: Wildfire Associated Health Risks Impacting Farmers and Ranchers.  This webinar  covers the rising issue of wildfires and the health impacts they impose on farmers and ranchers and also explores various health concerns including respiratory health, mental health, heat illnesses, deterioration of water quality, and injuries due to relocating livestock.  To view these new resources click here
Michigan Farm Stress Summit

The state of mental health among American Ag producers is a crisis that must be met with a rapid response. Agricultural occupations are often vulnerable to circumstances that are out of their control - unpredictable weather patterns, falling market prices, or labor shortages - which can be overwhelmingly stressful.

Michigan State University Extension is hosting the Farm Stress Management Summit that begins on Thursday, January 24, at 8:30 a.m. and concludes on Friday, January 25, at 5:30 p.m., attendees must be certified in Mental Health First Aid before the summit (offered Wednesday, January 23). Please share this with your network of  Extension colleagues and others who work directly with farmers, farm workers or ag industry professionals. To learn more and register, click here

Listen to recent FarmHer Podcast featuring AgriSafe's Community Health Nurse- Linda Emanuel and Marjorie Guyler-Alaniz discuss mental health awareness.

Fall 2018 Intern Spotlight

AgriSafe intern, Samantha Furnish,  is a current Master of Public Health student at Western Kentucky University.  Samantha made an immediate impact helping AgriSafe respond to the floods of Hurricane Florence and Michael as well as wildfire safety for agricultural workers.  Her masters degree in communications has been a great value to AgriSafe and has resulted in a stronger digital footprint for our work.  In her spare time Samantha spends time her  family - husband, Jon and son, Emerson Fitzgerald (called 'Fitz') and coaching all-star cheerleading!

Thank you Samantha, for all of your support!
