AgriSafe in Action - July 2018

Natural Disasters Preparedness

AgriSafe resource for protection during wildfires.
Natural disasters have become more frequent and intense since the 1980s, presenting challenges for about 2.5 billion people who depend on agriculture, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) states, almost a quarter of all financial losses caused by natural disasters were borne by the agricultural sector. Natural Disasters in 2017 cost American agriculture over $5 billion, including  Hurricane Harvey and California wildfires of which the impacts are still going on.

Farm owners should always set up an emergency plan  for general disaster preparedness. EPA provides a list of general information for communities and facilities, that can apply to many different disaster situations. There are also Safe Growth Strategies for many specific areas, supported by EPA-FEMA collaboration. AgriSafe offers resources on Protect Your Lungs From Wildfire Smoke and Safe And Healthy Recovery After a Farm Flood.

Welcome! New Summer Interns

Data Analyst Intern: Jillian Paist

Hi, my name is Jillian Paist and I am one of the newest interns to join AgriSafe. I'm originally from California but am currently pursuing my MPH in Epidemiology at Tulane University in New Orleans.

With AgriSafe, I'm working on the development of a resource targeted towards rural healthcare providers on how best to mitigate the opioid epidemic as it relates to rural agricultural workers. Similarly, I lend a hand in monitoring attendance and evaluations of the Nurse Scholar Program. I'm very honored to be here and excited about the work we're doing!

Data Analyst Intern: Rui Li

Hello, my name is Rui Li. I am a second year graduate student in Tulane, majoring in Epidemiology. I am interested in agricultural occupational health and health problems of farmers and some immigrant communities.

At AgriSafe, I provide data analysis support to measure outcomes and changes in healthy behavior and present the results in several methods. AgriSafe let me take part in webinars, where I extend my knowledge in agricultural occupational health. Working here is a great experience for me to connect with such an excellent team and professionals in the field of agriculture.

Health Communication Intern: Xinyue Gu

Hello,  this is Xinyue Gu. I'm in the same program as Jillian and Rui. I have a strong  interest in helping  to improve the health of agricultural producers, those people who feed us.

As the AgriSafe Health Communications Intern, I will help promote the marketing and branding of AgriSafe initiatives and manage social media sources. Hope we can provide more access of useful info for agri-producers!
