Special needs for old cows

K-State beef cattle experts say cows’ metabolisms change as they age

While a young person who turns 10 is considered an adolescent, cows at that age are considered old, according to the experts at the Kansas State University’s Beef Cattle Institute.Speaking on a recent Cattle Chat podcast, K-State veterinarian Brian Lubbers and beef cattle nutritionist Phillip Lancaster offered management tips for caring for older cows and factors that should be considered in making a culling decision.

“At some point, a cow’s reproductive ability will wane and at 10 years of age I’m going to be really critical if she does not have a calf every year and get bred on time,” Lubbers said. “Just because she is 10 years old or older, it doesn’t mean she can’t be a productive cow.”

Budgeting on the ranch

K-State agricultural economist Dustin Pendell shares how to use a budget in decision-making

Budgeting is a strategy that many people use to make sure they are living within their means. Oftentimes when considering a big expense, folks refer to the budget to see if they can afford that investment. In a beef cattle operation, it is important to follow a budget, but there are different types to consider, according to Kansas State University Beef Cattle Institute agricultural economist Dustin Pendell, speaking on a recent Cattle Chat podcast.

“There are all kinds of budgets that can help producers plan, from a cash flow budget to an enterprise budget to a partial budget,” Pendell said. He said a cash flow budget is simply tracking how much money is coming in and how much is going out.

One of the budgets he recommends for beef producers is an enterprise budget.

“With an enterprise budget you are thinking about all the revenues, including potential revenues and potential costs related to the operation,” Pendell said. “Oftentimes a banker will want to see this type of budget when deciding whether or not to grant an operating note.”

K-State announces speakers for 2025 Swine Profitability Conference

Registration now open for 35th annual event

Kansas State University’s 2025 Swine Profitability Conference, which focuses on providing information to aid pork producer’s business decisions, is planned for Tuesday, Feb. 4 in Manhattan.

Mike Tokach, a university distinguished professor and swine extension specialist in K-State’s Department of Animal Sciences and Industry, said the Swine Profitability Conference helps pork producers make decisions regarding their business and industry-wide issues.

“Profitability in swine production is influenced by major issues, such as pork demand and grain and soybean meal markets, but also by day-to-day decisions made inside the farm gate,” Tokach said. “Our speakers will address these critical topics.”

The conference will feature speakers from an array of swine-related businesses and organizations, including:

For Spring Gardens, start transplants now, says K-State horticulture expert

Spring gardens may seem distant in the midst of winter, but Kansas State University horticulture expert Cynthia Domenghini says it’s not too early to begin gathering seeds for the coming season.

In fact, many vegetables need to be started in January if gardeners intend to transplant them to the outdoor garden in March or April.

“Transplants for the vegetable garden typically require 4-6 weeks from seeding to transplant date,” Domenghini said.
