Rolling Hills Studio celebrates grand opening of newly expanded workshop in Sunderland
Local Brock Township business Rolling Hills Studio recently opened a new, expanded studio; a grand opening celebration, complete with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, was held on September 22. The new studio offers interactive workshops where participants can learn how to create art with fabric, clay and Powertex. Stop by the new studio at 10445 Sideroad 17, Sunderland.

At The Regional Municipality of Durham, we aim to serve you by keeping you up-to-date on current economic development initiatives, projects and opportunities in Durham Region. Project highlights include:
  • A Fall Farmers Market will be held at the Region of Durham Headquarters on October 5 from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.in the north parking lot, located at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby. There will be an assortment of local produce, savoury snacks and value-added agricultural products available. Support local farms and businesses by visiting the farmers market and help celebrate Ontario Agriculture Week from October 1 to 7.
Local students learn about agricultural science
and farming in Durham Region
Last month, high school students from the region attended the ninth annual Durham Farm Connections agri-science education day, held at Clarington Central Secondary School. The high school program is organized by Durham Farm Connections volunteers and supported by Durham Region's Planning and Economic Development Department. L ocal students were taught about the many economic, environmental and educational opportunities the agriculture sector provides and learned about topics such as: soil and aquatic health, green energy, marketing and labelling for food products and GMOs.

Durham Region hosts annual farm tour
at Reesor Elevators in Port Perry
The Durham Agricultural Advisory Committee (DAAC) successfully hosted its 16th annual farm tour at Reesor Elevators in Port Perry. The theme was "Harvesting the sun in Durham Region," and focused on educating participants about the crop industry in the region, including the work that goes into growing crops from primary production to end use consumer products.
 
Since the inaugural tour in 2003, DAAC has showcased more than 40 farms and other agricultural facilities to more than 1,100 participants.

Do It In Durham celebrates Global Entrepreneurship Week with business events, resources and networking opportunities
From November 12 to 16, over 40 business events will be held across the region as part of  Do It In DurhamĀ­--a collaborative series of events held during Global Entrepreneurship Week. The events are meant to inspire partnerships and education among Durham's entrepreneurial community, and include scheduled workshops in north Durham.

Small Business Week takes place October 14 to 20
The Business Development Bank of Canada's Small Business Week will take place from October 14 to 20 with over 300 business events being held across nationally. This year, the theme of the week is "Digitize now: Transform your business" where entrepreneurs are invited to measure their digital performance and learn about digitizing their businesses.

Local agriculture showcased at Farmers of Uxbridge Night
The ninth annual Farmers of Uxbridge Night took place on August 30 
at the Uxbridge Arena and Community Centre. Visitors got a chance to meet local farmers and enjoy locally grown food while learning about how food is grown and sold. The event also featured interactive displays and activities.
Brock Youth Centre launches new workshop dates
for EDGE program
 
The Brock Youth Centre's Entrepreneurship Development Generating Employment (EDGE) program is set to launch a new set of workshops this fall, including one in north Durham. The program focuses on building youth capacity in north Durham by teaching youth, ages 18 to 29, about entrepreneurship and how to be your own boss.  Students will learn about building business plans, gain employability skills and participate in networking opportunities.

Local Food Business Retention and Expansion (BR+E)
project update
In January 2018, the Region of Durham's Economic Development and Tourism Division launched a Local Food Business Retention and Expansion (BR + E) project aimed at supporting local business development and job creation in the agri-food food sector. Confidential interviews were conducted by trained volunteers with over 60 local food related businesses across Durham Region. The next phase of the Local Food BR+E project involves analyzing the survey data to develop goals, action plans and prepare a final report.

Congratulations to Jordan and Alex McKay of Willowtree Farm for being named Ontario's Outstanding Young Farmers!
The farmers of Willowtree Farm.
Brothers Jordan and Alex McKay were recently selected as Ontario's Outstanding Young Farmers for 2018 for their work at Willowtree Farm in Port Perry. Jordan and Alex developed unique ways to sell and use their produce in their year-round market and have designed the market to tell a story about buying local food.
They will compete at the national competition in Winnipeg from November 29 to December 2.  
 
Canada's Outstanding Young Farmers' program is an annual competition to recognize farmers that excel in their profession and promote agriculture.

Tourism Now Workshop showcases the region's tourism efforts
The Township of Brock recently hosted the Tourism Now Workshop at the Beaverton Thorah Community Centre. More than 30 attendees learned how Central Counties Tourism and Durham Tourism operate to market Durham Region as a destination for visitors; and how Brock businesses and organizations can be included in future marketing and promotional campaigns.
 
There was also a presentation of the results of the tourism-focused Business Retention and Expansion project undertaken by the Township of Brock and led by the Region of Durham's Economic Development and Tourism Division.

Video: The real dirt on farming in Clarington
The
Clarington Board of Trade produced a a home-grown, engaging video to highlight agriculture in Clarington. Told by members of the Clarington agriculture community, the video describes the realities and rewards of farming as a business and as a passion. The video aims to inspire and encourage viewers to learn more about the importance of farming.
