(Headingly, MB) Agriculture in the Classroom Canada (AITC-C) elected four new Board Executive Officers during its 8th Annual General Meeting. AITC-C represents ten provincial members dedicated to delivering agriculture education to students and teachers across the nation. These organizations also appoint a representative to sit on AITC-C’s Board of Directors.
The new Executive includes Mathieu Rouleau of École-O-Champ as Vice Chair, Charlotte Flores of Agriculture in the Classroom New Brunswick as Secretary, and Luree Williamson of Agriculture for Life as Treasurer. Rebecca Sooksom of Agriculture in the Classroom Nova Scotia takes on the role of Chair, with Pat Tonn of BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation stepping aside after two successful years in the position.
Sooksom brings valuable experience to the role of AITC-C Chair as a champion for agriculture education. She has been working for the Nova Scotia Department of Agriculture for the past 13 years, and has served as the Manager of Regional Programming overseeing Agriculture in the Classroom Nova Scotia since 2018. She will bring that same passion and leadership nationally.
“I’m very honoured to have the opportunity to lead the AITC-C's board during this exciting time. We’ve experienced such significant growth in the size of our organization and reach over the past couple of years. We are poised to create more and more impact in building public trust and passion for agricultural careers through inspiring student experiences,” Sooksom shared.
“We have realized tremendous growth and recognition in the past two years as the 'go to' organization for agriculture education in the country. Our strength is in the dedication of our 10 member provinces to raise the profile of AITC-C and have impact in the classroom,” Tonn expressed.
At the recent Annual General Meeting AITC-C Executive Director, Johanne Ross presented AITC-C’s 2021/2022 Annual Progress Report that boasted a phenomenal 2.3 million student experiences from coast-to-coast.
“I am so proud to celebrate with AITC’s members and partners today! It is AITC-C’s 8th year of bringing agriculture education to classrooms across Canada and to see the increase in our impact is so monumental!” Ross shared. “The AITC Board of Directors remains deeply dedicated to our national collaborations, and I want to extend my personal thanks to Pat Tonn for her leadership throughout the past two years of incredible growth and development for AITC-C. I am honoured to continue working alongside this Board under what I know will be the exceptional direction of Rebecca Sooksom.”
The Annual Progress Report highlights AITC-C’s commitment and success in creating meaningful connections to agriculture and food in classrooms across Canada. These connections will inspire a life-long understanding and appreciation of food and where it comes from. View the full report here.
