To begin, please tell us a little about yourself and VirsaTel.

I began my career in telecom at AT&T, first participating in their Business Sales Leadership Development program where I developed product knowledge (Wireless, Wireline, IP, Data, and Voice), and then serving as Client Solutions Executive in the greater Denver region. During that time, I managed 250 accounts across five states. After three years, I transitioned to a Regional Director role, managing, coaching, and training a team of eight sales executives while being responsible for growing revenue across Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana.

In 2017, I went on to found VirsaTel with the intention of creating an organization that could become a quality partner. During that time, there were changes happening at AT&T, and it seemed like a logical point to try and become a partner that was better than the ones I had experienced in the past—one that would do right by their clients.

VirsaTel is a team of highly motivated self-starters who cross-sell between mobility, wireline, and other auxiliary services to best meet their customer’s needs. Since our inception, we’ve steadily grown to a team of 20 all-stars, with no signs of slowing down. We specialize in wireless solutions and management, network and data infrastructure, unified communications, contact center solutions, and cybersecurity. When starting the business, we realized that most partners in the channel focus on wireline and network-based services but being with AT&T in an out-of-region territory where Lumen (CenturyLink) was the underlying carrier, it was difficult to sell network. Because of that, we learned to sell mobility, a far more underserved marketplace.

What do you like about working with AireSpring?

"AireSpring has been an easy vendor to work with thanks to our stellar relationship with the channel team, AireSpring’s quick pricing turnarounds and their innovative QuoteSpring tool. ...We have had nothing but positive experiences. ...AireSpring has really made the whole process simple to navigate, and I really appreciate that."

AireSpring has been an easy vendor to work with thanks to our stellar relationship with the channel team, AireSpring’s quick pricing turnarounds and their innovative QuoteSpring tool, and the competitive posture AireSpring exhibits in the marketplace. We have had nothing but positive experiences.

AireSpring Regional Channel Manager Kent Krebs is fantastic to work with and extremely responsive. He doesn’t beat around the bush. Having someone like Kent makes it a lot easier to get things done—when you sell a solution with AireSpring, a whole team of project management experts are involved and bring in a lot of resources to minimize the pain of an installation and get things done promptly. The project management team at AireSpring pays attention to details, continually stays engaged with customers, and makes sure we always know what’s going on. Compared to other organizations, AireSpring has really made the whole process simple to navigate, and I really appreciate that.

What would you say is the secret to being a successful technology advisor in today’s marketplace?

The channel is flooded with competition. It’s imperative that you take the sales hat off and talk to customers like they are people. I see this lacking in the marketplace sometimes, so when a customer feels you’re being yourself, they too can let their hair down and speak a bit more candidly.

"The channel is flooded with competition. It’s imperative that you take the sales hat off and talk to customers like they are people."

This is especially important since we’re operating more digitally than ever before, including selling over video conferences, and communicating with customers. Customers are so inundated with salespeople who just follow the script, and as we know, “talking is not selling,” so we have to take a more personable approach and truly connect with the customer.

For those just starting out in the industry, it takes several months to several years of the grind to get enough of a reputation and experience in the industry to really make an impact and have customers take you seriously. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme and it takes time to build recurring revenue. As I mentioned, it’s tough competition in the channel, and most of us are not big brands like AT&T or Verizon. It’s important not to try and do everything in the channel—find some niche, some area of specialty that you can speak very granularly to and then a customer will have confidence that you know what you’re talking about and can provide them with legitimate advice. Once you establish that trust, they will open up about other needs and projects that they have and give you a chance to consult and help them source a solution.

What do you foresee happening in the channel in 2024 (or, what is the “next big thing” or “things” you think people should be aware of or get involved in, etc.)?

"We should all pay more attention to doing business the right way, making sure that we represent the channel in the most positive way possible."

The channel has been growing at a rapid pace over the past several years, and because it’s grown so fast, it’s become a disruptor in the industry. Many direct sales companies have moved, or are considering moving, more resources to the channel. From a customer perspective, that means there’s more opportunity for them to become acquainted with the channel. It also means that the channel will come under increased scrutiny, which is a good thing. We should all pay more attention to doing business the right way, making sure that we represent the channel in the most positive way possible.

Fixed wireless also seems to be a burgeoning item which could impact the marketplace. As 5G adoption accelerates, customers now can run small office/home office (SoHo) sites via cellular, when in the past it had to be a fixed connection. This could be a disruptor in years to come.

What are some of your hobbies and interests outside of telecom?

I really enjoy getting out into the world and doing anything exhilarating, whether it be riding dirt bikes, land-based shark fishing, scuba diving, mountain biking, etc. If it gets your heart pumping, I’m probably into it. There are some really good mountain biking trails by my house. We recently did some fishing on the flats of Cancun, and that was a lot of fun. I also like to fish here in Colorado.

The most exhilarating thing in my life is watching our little baby girl, now 9 months old, grow up. That has been incredible to see, and I’m fortunate to have great support from my wife Kayla in this endeavor.

Tell us about your professional background and jobs you’ve held prior to joining AireSpring.

I have over 15 years of experience in telecom, and have built relationships in the industry across Texas, Louisiana, and the rest of the Gulf South. I began my career in telecommunications as a Solutions Advisor at Universal Com One, a Mitel dealer, and as Gulf South Regional Sales Director/Channel Manager Central U.S. at Voice Carrier, LLC. I also founded Greer Group, a cloud consulting service for businesses based in the Gulf South region, where I specialized in delivering voice over IP (VoIP) solutions while evaluating businesses for data migration to the cloud.

Before joining AireSpring, I served as Senior Regional Channel Manager at Sangoma, a communication as a service (CaaS) provider. While at Sangoma, I built sales strategies across the Gulf South region, leveraged my relationships across the channel, and established partnerships with major technology solutions distributors (TSDs).

Tell us about your role at AireSpring and how you support our channel partners and their clients.

The fact that I was an agent prior to joining AireSpring has a big influence on how I approach being a channel manager. Whether I’m working with a partner or a regional representative from a technology solutions distributor (TSD), networking and establishing lasting connections is a big part of what I do. My goal is to continue to deepen my current relationships with partners, as well as engage with and develop a rapport with new ones. It’s also important for me to continue to be aware of changes in the marketplace, and help partners strategize around winning new business.

The way AireSpring’s portfolio is designed really positions us to be able to wrap services around a customer, and that is something that really differentiates us in the industry, and I use it to my advantage when working with partners and their customers. The spiffs on renewals that AireSpring offers is also another big draw—I don’t know of many in the industry, if any, who offer the kind of incentives that AireSpring does, so I make sure to highlight that when working with partners.

What do you like about working at AireSpring?

The leadership at AireSpring have made customer service the company’s primary objective, and that’s something I wanted to be a part of. Here in the Houston region, we’ve laid out an exciting road map for the future of AireSpring. We have a lot to offer partners and customers in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, which is a big market in Texas. On top of that, products such as our Managed Global SD-WAN set us apart in the industry--it’s clear that we’re doing things that others aren’t. I have more conversations with partners that indicate to me that we can provide an array of solutions that aren’t always available elsewhere. I’m working on opportunities with partners that I would have never been able to work with otherwise, and I think that really speaks to AireSpring’s presence in the market, and how we’ve excelled from a customer service standpoint. Nothing’s perfect in this industry, but when you’re doing things right to keep customers, that goes a long way and gets you noticed. I’ve heard a lot of positive feedback from partners about the quality of AireSpring’s customer service, and that’s really a testament to the great work of the team here.

Along with that, the fact that our escalation list goes up to the CEO is a testament to how confident we are in our services. The fact that we offer that means a lot to me, and I often bring it up to partners and their customers so they’re aware of how important resolving and staying ahead of any potential issues is to us.

Tell us about your hobbies outside of work.

My main hobby is disc golf, and I play it often. I’ve been an athlete all my life, and disc golf helps keep me in shape. It also puts me in a competitive environment and helps keep me young. Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic, disc golf courses have been popping up everywhere, because parks can easily dedicate extra space to a disc golf course, and that’s been really fun to see. People are drawn to it like a magnet.

Family and church also keep me busy. I have a wife, Tammy, and son, Jordan, who is 18. I’m really involved in my church and have been leading a faith-based men’s group—the Armored Men’s Group---since 2014. That’s a big part of every week for me; my son is also a part of the group, and it’s great because we have participants of all ages, from teenagers to 80-year-olds. The Armored Men’s Group is about men helping men get through life, and it’s a pretty special thing, so I’m glad to be a part of it.
