AIRFIELD UPDATE NEWSLETTER

April 2025

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE) is committed to being a responsible member of the community and keeping you informed on airfield projects, special events, and other news that may impact the standard flow of air traffic. Check out our latest updates below.

UPCOMING PROJECTS - PREPARING FOR THE FUTURE

To support future demand, right-size our field, and ensure the efficient allocation of resources, MKE is moving forward with several important projects. These initiatives are aligned with our Airport Master Plan and will help position MKE for long-term success while continuing to serve the needs of our passengers and community.

  • Taxiway Removal: Taxiway A1 will be removed starting April 14th and will conclude at the end of June. This project should not alter noise levels or change flight routes.

  • Runway Closure: Runway 7R/25L (the primary east-west runway in red on the map below) will be closed from April 23rd to May 7th for a separate phase of the taxiway removal project. You may notice additional aircraft flying north or south during this time as Runway 19L/1R (the primary north-south runway) will be in use.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Aviation in Wisconsin truly comes alive as the weather warms up. From airshows to community fly-ins, summer is the perfect time to experience the excitement of flight. Here are a few upcoming aviation events around MKE:

June 7th

Mark you calendars for Timmerman Airport's 8th Annual Flour Drop Contest on Saturday, June 7th at 10:00AM. Pilot and passenger duos will compete to see who can drop a bag of flour closest to a bullseye on the airfield. Participation is free and lunch will be provided for all attendees. Follow Milwaukee's Timmerman Airport Facebook page for event updates.

July 19th - July 20th

The exhilarating Waterstone Bank Air & Water Show returns to McKinley Park and Bradford Beach. This year’s event promises an unforgettable experience, headlined by the specular U.S. Navy Blue Angels. Community members around MKE and in the greater Milwaukee area should expect increased aircraft noise during the week of the event.

July 21st - July 25th

The annual EAA AirVenture returns to Oshkosh. While this event does not typically result in noise impacts near MKE, there may be additional aircraft traffic over southeastern Wisconsin as aircraft arrive and depart Oshkosh.

HAVE A NOISE CONCERN?

If you have questions or would like to report a noise concern, please contact the MKE Noise Office via one of the following methods:

Please note that as a public use airport, MKE does not have the legal authority to prevent or restrict any aircraft from operating at the airport, nor can it control flight routes. Congress has provided the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) with exclusive authority to regulate aviation safety, the efficiency of the navigable airspace, and air traffic control, among other things. However, the FAA cannot restrict or dictate how many flights or at what hours aircraft operators are allowed to fly.

MKE AIRPORT SURPASSES 6.3 MILLION PASSENGERS IN 2024

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport’s (MKE) passenger traffic numbers continued to soar in 2024 as the Airport saw a 5% increase in travelers compared to the previous year. In addition to welcoming more passengers, MKE also introduced new air service and added amenities and concessions options throughout the year.
