Can you believe we made it to August?! Hope everyone is staying cool out there during this heatwave. If it's any consolation, we have 145 days until Christmas, I'm sure it will be nice and cool by then.
Welcome to the August addition of "Airways Insider"! This month we have a lot of things happening, including the beginning of our Trade Show Season and believe me it's going to be a hot one!
We want to also congratulate our newest "Employee of the Month". Thank you for reading our Airways Insider and feel free to share!

Airways Freight Employee of the Month Erin Stanley!

"Erin at work is all business. She is super knowledgeable with both import and export ocean business, and has the skills to consistently be one of, if not the top volume operators in international every year. This is especially remarkable since she started in the air freight business, when we didn’t even do move ocean freight! I would put her skill and overall knowledge of that industry against any operations person at any company anywhere. We are lucky to have her!"
~ Brad Watson, Executive Vice President, International Services

“As a person, Erin is smart and funny and a bit of a rebel. As an AFC employee, she is loyal, capable, and hardworking. As a friend, she is loving and generous, and thoughtful. There is no doubt she is an asset to Airways; and so much more to those of us lucky enough to be her friend.” ~ Jamie Reed, Assistant Security Coordinator

"I am very happy to hear that Erin was voted employee of the month - you go girl!
"I do not get to work with Erin on a daily basis, but if I need something, she is always quick to respond and always ready to lend a hand.
"In 2019, Erin assisted me with a large Porsche project in Palm Springs. She was an invaluable asset to our team and worked long days, nights, and weekends. Her dedication and commitment to the project resulted in a very successful launch for Porsche.
"I know Erin to be extremely hard working with an incredible work ethic, and she is funny as hell! She’s a tough cookie when she needs to be, but her secret weapon is her heart of gold. That makes for an unbeatable combination and explains why she is such a valued member of our Airways family. She is also a genuinely caring person, and I am lucky to call her my friend. Congratulations Erin, you deserve it!"
~ Lotta Bergqvist-Knoll, Sales Agent, Airways Freight

"Erin has been in the international department since January of 2001 and handles primarily commercial and product shipments, both import and export.
"Erin is self-sufficient in her day-to-day operations, routinely taking work home, covering her shipments at all hours of the day and night, to include weekends.
She’s knowledgeable in all things ocean freight and well versed in Incoterms.
"Erin has handled most every type of ocean shipment possible to include containers, out of gauge shipments, static and RoRo (roll on/roll off) cargo.
She’s also the go to person for HAZMAT cargo by ocean.
"She’s quick to respond to quote requests and handles nearly all of the department’s haz-mat shipments.
If Erin says she’s handling it - its being handled!"
~ Jerome Casey, Vice President, Ocean Operations

Welcome to August! Besides the kids going back to school, there are a lot of things past, present and future happening during the month.
In 8BC the month of August was named in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus.
On August 6, 1762, the very first sandwich was created! It was named after the Earl of Sandwich when he requested a dish with meat between two pieces of bread.
August has two birth flowers – Gladiolus and Crimson Poppy. The Gladiolus is said to represent generosity, sincerity, and strength of character. The Crimson Poppy is a sign of imagination and eternal sleep.
If you were born in August, your astrological sign is either a Leo or Virgo depending on the day of your birthday. Leos are said to be proud and display great leadership. Virgos are usually hardworking and analytical. Your birthstone happens to be the peridot which has a shade of grass green to a more olive color. The peridot is quite rare and is only found deep in the earth and expelled to the surface along with lava. They can also be found in meteorites. Peridots have a certain healing power and can protect you from evil.
Another bit of trivia about August is on August 24, 79AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted near the city. It spewed out ash, smoke and pumice that rained down on the residents of Pompeii and eventually those remaining were buried in molten lava 7 feet deep!
