Employee of the Month
BECKY EVANS
Introducing our Airways Freight Employee of the Month, Becky Evans!

When it comes to paying the bills, no one does it better than Becky Evans. Having been in Accounts Payable for over half of her life, she began her tenure with Airways Freight in February of 1993 and to this day is the definition of loyalty.

We are happy to announce that Becky has been nominated as this month's "Employee of the Month".

Here is what some of her co-workers have to say about Becky:

"Just before I started here, Becky had come into my previous place of employment (Harps) wearing a Mudbug t-shirt. It was a casual Friday, and just before the May Mudbug event. I asked her about Airways, and what it was like working here. Her response was so enthusiastic and welcoming! You could tell she genuinely loves this company, and all of the people here. I was really impressed, and it cemented my decision to join the team. (Best decision ever!) Thanks to Becky for being a great ambassador for Airways Freight & thanks for all you do!"   ~ Patty Osburn, Manager, International Trade Show Services

"Becky has been a dedicated employee for close to 30 years (28). She was instrumental in creating the current accounts payable system we use today through many different structural changes over the years. She has built strong bonds with our vendors, which have proven to be invaluable and aided in the ongoing respect given to Airways as a reliable partner to our carriers. We are fortunate to have such a dedicated and focused employee and friend who has and continues to exhibit the highest degree of professionalism."  ~ Grant Green, Director of Corporate Administration

"Becky is always a great person to work with. No matter what is going on she is always cheerful, always glad to be here, and always willing to stop what she is doing to help you right away. Thank you Becky for always being a shining example of our Airways family. Congratulations." ~ Erik Fortin, Director of Operations

Division Spotlight
HEATHER DUMAS

Q: When did you start originally and how long were you here at Airways?

A: I met the Airways group back in 1992 when we were all young and good looking. I was waiting tables at a sports bar and thought it would be interesting to try a desk job. I came on board as a receptionist. I later moved to the back to work in Domestic. I stayed for a couple of years then went off to try other things. I came back a second time, I think it was 2009. I started off at the same desk doing the same reception job I had decades earlier. It was a real déjà vu feeling. Again, I stayed there a few months and eventually moved to the Customs Brokerage division. I had no idea what customs was or what they did, so of course I volunteered. It has been an interesting trip ever since.

Q: What was the deciding factor in you coming back to Airways?

A: They asked. Simple as that. Airways had always opened new doors for me in the past. I am excited to see what doors open this time.

Q: What is it that you do exactly?

A: Tedious book work. I push a lot of paper and read a lot of regulations. I work as a liaison between someone importing products into the United States and government agencies responsible for regulating product compliance. Basically, I look at a product, then tell you what is required in order to get it into the country. Then I push the paperwork through and coordinate its movement with logistic providers.

Q: What all went into you obtaining your broker license?

A: Hours and years of hard study. Learning the data entry part of customs brokerage was and is easy. Understanding it is a completely different game. To get a license you have to take a four-hour test. It is open book, but it’s a huge book! I studied two hours every night after work, for about a year. I took dozens of practice tests. The ability to plow through huge amounts of information in a short amount of time was essential.

Q: What have you been doing since leaving Airways?

A: I started my own company, HD Customs Brokers, Inc. I took the knowledge I learned at Airways and expanded on it to create an International trade consulting firm. We specialize in two things.

1.  Help small businesses grow by improving their import and export supply chains.
2.  Prepare and assist foreign companies to do business in the United States. It has been an interesting and challenging adventure. I have enjoyed every minute of it. Even the painful and hard lessons learned along the way.

Q: What kind of business goals do you have for the 2021 year?

A: We’re combining the best parts of HD and Airways and setting off on a new adventure.
Primary focus will be developing ecommerce. Then going after new international business.
It should be an interesting year.
This month the employees at Airways have been offered an opportunity to take a CPR class. You never know when you will be in an emergency situation that could require lifesaving skills.

This training includes multiple skills in controlling severe bleeding, CPR, and AED. Upon successful completion of the course and test, employees will receive an AHA HeartSaver CPR/AED Card that is valid for two (2) years.
Final Thoughts...
As we head into the second month of 2021 we want to prepare ourselves for any technological threats or issues that might arise.

Airways Freight embraces the responsibility of security of services and data. To that end, we employ a multi-faceted approach to ensure integrity throughout our organization. This includes monthly security awareness training for all employees, a redundant network security infrastructure with regular testing, regular security patching, multi-factor authentication, automatic backups with verification, as well as constantly monitored and evaluated anti-virus systems. Not to overlook our physical headquarters, we utilize encrypted access control for entry and surveillance systems throughout.

With an overall focus of Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability we pair our security solutions to protect against a wide field of threats. However, each individual solution is laser focused to keep us continually available to our agents and customers as well as protecting our information and theirs.
