Your November/December 2017 News

Meet Our Professionalism Award Winner
Attorney Carmen Roberto

The room was filled with an air of conviviality and goodwill when friends, family, and colleagues gathered at Firestone Country Club on November 14 to honor the Akron Bar Association's 2017 Professionalism Award recipient, Attorney Carmen Roberto.

Prior to that evening, I had the opportunity to spend a pleasant hour interviewing Carmen in his office at Niekamp, Weisensell, Mutersbaugh & Mastrantonio . His office walls are covered with photos that reflect not only his many interests, but the many people he has met over the years, particularly while serving as president of the Akron Bar and the Ohio State Bar Association. Each photo has a story that goes with it, and Carmen is, without question, a consummate storyteller.

It is because I recognized that storyteller in him that I have chosen to offer this interview as an audio file, as recorded. This is a bit of an experiment for the Akron Bar, but I hope that we can begin providing more content as podcasts that members will be able to listen to at their leisure.

By now, you’ve probably heard of the duty of technology competence. As  more and more states  adopt it, more and more articles get written about it, and more and more CLEs get presented about it. But the focus of all this is largely on the nature and scope of the duty. One aspect we hear little about is how lawyers can get and remain technologically competent. Read more....
Akron Bar LRIS Celebrates
Lawyer Referral Panelists

Camaraderie among colleagues enriches the soul and builds stronger working relationships, all of which in turn make for a more successful enterprise. There is no substitute for interpersonal communication: a personal introduction, a live voice on the phone, someone you know offering you a new opportunity.

The Lawyer Referral and Information Service Committee was delighted to host the attorneys who are members of the LRIS panel for a cocktail reception on Monday, November 20, 2017. Delicious hors d’oeuvres by Special Moments Catering, a trio of musicians from the Akron Symphony, and the opportunity for our LRIS panelists to spend a few hours together, all combined to create a wonderful evening. Probate Court Collects Holiday Mail for Heroes

Summit County Probate Court collected nearly 650 cards to be distributed to veterans and sent to active duty military and their families this season. The Probate staff joined forces with Barberton Elementary East to sign or create cards to honor the service and sacrifice of the recipients. These cards will be distributed through the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes campaign.

This is the fourth year that the staff has kicked off the project with a November luncheon hosted by Judge Elinore Marsh Stormer. The true artistry was added by 97 fourth graders and the student council members of Barberton East whose teachers used this season of giving to teach important lessons about honor and service.

Some of the favorite cards included:
“We thank you for all you have done. You protect the U.S.A.,” said Blake.
”Thank you for serving our country,” said Reis.
“You are so brave to fight for us,” said Gabby.

The project has exceeded expectations with a 62% increase in cards going to our veterans this year.
