From the President

Recently, I had a conversation with a Bar member who suggested that the Akron Bar, and others bar associations, did not do anything for larger firms. Being the disagreeable person my family suggests that I am, I disagreed and explained why. While I have said this before, it deserves mention again that the greatest function of the Akron Bar Association is to be a conduit.  Read more....
Meet Bob Brown
2018 Bradford M. "Buck" Gearinger Professionalism Award Recipient

There are two things you should know about Bob Brown that aren’t immediately evident when you first meet him. Beneath that Columbo-like trench coat and tan ball cap is a guy who’s attended the Sturgis (SD) Motorcycle Rally 11 times and who –despite being a tad south of age 80 – works out at his Merriman Valley gym three or four times a week. Those two things, plus doing the legal work he loves are what keep Bob young in heart and mind.  Read more....

Limited Scope Representation: Benefits for You and Your Client

Imagine this scenario: a potential client is referred to you by the Bar Association or finds you through an internet search and comes to your office seeking a divorce after enduring years of abuse. She is nervous and is uncertain about where to begin. After meeting with her for an initial consultation, you determine that it would make sense for you to represent her. You explain to her the process for filing and begin to go over your firm’s fee structure. Everything is going smoothly until she realizes that she cannot afford the retainer. You cannot negotiate because you need to support your family and keep the practice afloat and earning legal fees is your only income. It would take her a year to save up $2,500. So, you both are disappointed and the meeting ends awkwardly with no option for moving forward. From impoverished to empowered: The value of our vision

By Steven McGarrity
Executive Director
Community Legal Aid Services

Poor. Poverty-stricken. Needy. Indigent. Economically insecure. Low-income. Destitute. Working class.

There are many ways to describe those in our communities who are suffering and struggling. And as a non-profit law firm, we’ve used them all.

Our language and the words we choose change depending on our hoped outcome - from trying cases in the courtroom, to applying for grant applications, to speaking with our volunteers, to engaging with the media.

But what each of these words and phrases does is focus solely on the financial aspects of poverty. And beyond that, they subconsciously lay blame on the people suffering in these conditions. Like it’s their fault. Like they just need to work a little harder, or try a little more.
