Weekly, we share highlights from Council's legislative agenda from the previous Monday's Committee and Council meetings. We also feature the definitions of and information about commonly used terms and acquaint you with council-related facts.

Legislative Highlights From Monday, February 13th, 2023

ORDINANCE NO. 31-2023 designating an area north of Merriman Road and west of Akron-Peninsula Road as the “Merriman Valley Community Entertainment District” pursuant to Sections 103.01-103.06 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of Akron; and declaring an emergency. (Public Hearing was held 1/30/2023)

ORDINANCE NO. 34-2023 authorizing the Director of the Department of Planning and Urban Development to enter into a contract or contracts for transportation planning services in order to carry out the intent and purpose of programs under the Federal Consolidated Planning Grant for the calendar year ending December 31, 2023, and in order to further the Akron Metropolitan Area Transportation Study’s (AMATS) goals and objectives of maintaining a cooperative, continuous, and comprehensive framework for making transportation investment decisions in the Akron metropolitan area; and declaring an emergency.

RESOLUTION NO. 35-2023 congratulating Akron’s own son and hometown hero, LeBron James, on his astounding and historic accomplishment in becoming the NBA’s all-time leading scorer; expressing appreciation for his continued significant civic and charitable commitment to the Akron community; and declaring an emergency.

Akron Safe Pledge Program

Akron City Council has launched the Akron Safe Pledge Program to provide funding for creating a safe dining experience during a rise in COVID-19 cases this season.

Campaign Finance

Campaign finance laws limit contributions citizens may make to council members or candidates.

Ordinance 303-2022 passed 11/7/22 set the following limits:

$750 maximum to any ward councilperson or candidate participating in a primary election.
$750 maximum to any ward councilperson or candidate participating in a general election.
$1,000 maximum to any at large councilperson or candidate participating in a primary election.
$1,000 maximum to any at large councilperson or candidate participating in a general election.

These limits are on contributions made by check. Cash contributions to candidates are limited to $25.
