Legislative Highlights From Monday, March 27th, 2023

RESOLUTION NO. 74-2023 adopting an annual operating budget for the fiscal year 2023; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 8-5 (Holland, Malik, Mosley, Neal, Omobien)

ORDINANCE NO. 75-2023 to make the annual appropriation for the current expenses, other expenditures and the capital outlays of the City of Akron for the fiscal year ending December 31, 2023; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 8-5 (Holland, Malik, Mosley, Neal, Omobien)

ORDINANCE NO. 76-2023 authorizing the Mayor, or his designee, to enter into a contract or contracts, after publicly advertising for bids, for the provision of medical debt relief services for the purpose of providing Akron residents relief from the burden of excessive medical debt; and declaring an emergency. Vote:12-1 (Neal)

RESOLUTION NO. 77-2023 congratulating the Buchtel High School Boys Basketball Team on winning the Division II Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Championship; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 13-0

RESOLUTION NO. 78-2023 congratulating the Archbishop Hoban High School Boys Basketball Team on winning the Division I Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA) State Championship; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 13-0

RESOLUTION NO. 79-2023 declaring the month of April 2023 Minority Health Month in the City of Akron, to raise awareness about health disparities that continue to affect racial and ethnic minority populations and encourage action through health education, early detection, and control of disease complications; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 12-0 (Freeman absent)

Council held a Special Meeting on March 30, 2023

RESOLUTION NO. 80-2023 approving and confirming the appointment by Akron City Council of Brandyn Costa to the Akron Citizens’ Police Oversight Board, as established by Charter Section 68a; and declaring an emergency. Vote: 12-1 (Neal).

April is Minority Health Month!

Council passed Resolution 79-2023 (see above).

Stephanie Roy and Kristen Harris from Summit County Public Health- Office of Minority Health attended Monday's Health & Social Services Committee meeting to speak about the importance of Minority Health Month. You can view that meeting here.

Community Relations Survey

Trust and transparency between law enforcement agencies and the people they serve is vital to community stability, officer safety, and effective policing. Police officials rely on the cooperation of community members to provide information about crime in their neighborhoods, and to work with the police to devise solutions to crime and disorder problems. Similarly, community members’ willingness to trust the police depends on whether they believe that police actions reflect community values. Akron Safe Pledge Program

Akron City Council has launched the Akron Safe Pledge Program to provide funding for creating a safe dining experience during a rise in COVID-19 cases this season.
