Legislative Highlights From Monday, May 22, 2023


ORDINANCE NO. 147-2023 approving the 2023 Consolidated Annual Action Plan including applications and certifications for the Community Development Block Grant (“Community Development”), the HOME Investment Partnership (“HOME”) and Emergency Solutions Grant (“ESG”) Programs; authorizing the Director of Planning and Urban Development to enter into all necessary contracts for the operation and term of the Programs; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 10, Nays: 0 (Holland abstained on the Consent Agenda; Freeman and Fusco were absent).


ORDINANCE NO. 150-2023 authorizing the Director of Finance, or his designee, to enter into a contract or contracts for the City of Akron to provide $250,000.00 over a two-year period to support the Sojourner Truth Plaza Project in downtown Akron; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 10, Nays: 0 (Holland abstained on the Consent Agenda; Freeman and Fusco were absent).


ORDINANCE NO. 157-2023 authorizing the Mayor, or his designee, to file an application for and, if awarded, accept and expend grant funding from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Grant Program; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 11; Nays: 0 (Freeman & Fusco absent) If awarded, this grant funding will be used for an Urban Canopy Workforce Development program partnering with the Akron Zoo, Truly Reaching You (TRY), Summit County Health Department, Davey Tree, and CommEN Strategies. Please take a look at the Public Utilities & Green Committee meeting where this was discussed.


ORDINANCE NO. 158-2023 authorizing the Mayor, or his designee, to file an application for and, if awarded, accept and expend grant funding from the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, NatureWorks grant program; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 11; Nays: 0 (Freeman & Fusco absent) If awarded, the City plans to use this grant to work with Akron Parks Collaborative to make improvements to the existing foot trail at Hyre Park.


The following Ordinance was read in and referred for Public Hearing:


ORDINANCE authorizing a Conditional Use to establish an insurance agency at 487 Darrow Road; and declaring an emergency. (Up for Public Hearing on June 5, 2023. See the notice here.)

Upcoming Open Comment Public Hearings


Notices are posted on our website at least 15 days prior to the meeting date. These notices are also advertised in the Akron Beacon Journal at least 15 days prior to the meeting date.


If the Ordinance is a Conditional Use (Zoning measure), a notice is also mailed to the owners and residents of property within, contiguous to, and directly across the street from the property involved in the Ordinance (per Charter Section 34).


You do not need to fill out any forms to participate. You may attend in person in Council Chambers or remotely via videoconference. Those wishing to attend remotely need to notify the Clerk of Council as outlined in the meeting notice in order to receive the information to join remotely.
