We share highlights from Council's legislative agenda from the previous Monday's Committee and Council meetings each week. Definitions and information about commonly used terms and council-related facts are also featured.

Legislative Highlights From Monday, June 26, 2023

Ordinance No. 177-2023 authorizing the Purchasing Agent to enter into a contract or contracts, without the formality of advertising for bids, with Esri to implement ArcGIS Winter Weather Solution software with existing Akron GIS platforms in furtherance of supporting snow and ice operations in the City; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 10, Nays: 0. This will include a public-facing hub, internal operations dashboard and reporting tools.

Resolution No. 178-2023 approving and confirming the appointment of Elizabeth Kukwa to the Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 10, Nays: 0. The Urban Design and Historic Preservation Commission provides independent aesthetic review of various development projects in the city, and reviews applications for historic designation of local buildings and districts. The Budget & Finance Committee received an APRA update. You can view the information here or watch the full presentation to the Committee here. Akron remains the only major City in the State of Ohio that maintains a real-time public spending dashboard that communicates to whom ARPA-SLFRF dollars are going.

Attention Residents of

Wards 3, 4, & 5!

This program provides Ring doorbell cameras to eligible households that reside in high-crime areas. The eligible zip codes in Wards 3, 4, and 5 were selected based on the 2022 crime hotspot map provided by the Akron Police Department.

This program will be first come first served.

2023 Traffic Calming Program

Speed tables are scheduled to be installed by the end of June.

Speeding in residential neighborhoods is one of the most common concerns City of Akron officials hear from residents. Implementing various traffic calming measures where appropriate is one way to improve the safety of our streets. Read more about the 2023 Program here.

Upcoming Open Comment Public Hearings

Up for Public Hearing July 3, 2023:

Ordinance authorizing a Conditional Use to construct an addition to an outpatient medical clinic at 527 W. Market Street.

Notices are posted on our website at least 15 days prior to the meeting date.

Suppose the Ordinance is a Conditional Use (Zoning measure). In that case, a notice is also mailed to the owners and residents of property within, contiguous to, and directly across the street from the property involved in the Ordinance (per Charter Section 34).

You do not need to fill out any forms to participate. You may attend in person in Council Chambers or remotely via videoconference.

Those wishing to attend remotely need to notify the Clerk of Council as outlined in the meeting notice in order to receive the information to join remotely.

Akron Safe Pledge Program

Akron City Council has launched the Akron Safe Pledge Program to provide funding for creating a safe dining experience during a rise in COVID-19 cases this season.
