Legislative Highlights From Monday, July 17, 2023



ORDINANCE NO. 193-2023 amending Title 7, Chapter 70 “Traffic Code,” Section 70.51 “Return of Towed Vehicles” of the Akron Codified Ordinances to eliminate the mandatory fee for the return of towed vehicles; and declaring an emergency. This fee has been a cause for concern that has been repeatedly raised during Tow Review Board meetings. The Tow Review Board unanimously agreed to issue the recommendation that Council remove the $15 fee from Section 70.51 (A) of the Codified Ordinances. Vote: Ayes: 11, Nays: 0 (Kammer absent, Mosley abstained from the Consent Agenda)


ORDINANCE NO. 196-2023 authorizing the Director of Law to enter into a contract with the Summit County Public Defender Commission to provide legal services for indigent defendants in Akron Municipal Court, in accordance with the requirements of the Constitution of the United States with respect to the provision of legal representation to indigent defendants; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 11, Nays: 0 (Kammer absent, Mosley abstained from the Consent Agenda)


ORDINANCE NO. 197-2023 authorizing the Purchasing Agent to enter into a contract or contracts with the Humane Society of Summit County for the rescue of severely injured, abused, or neglected animals seized in the City of Akron; and declaring an emergency. Visit the Humane Society's website here. Vote: Ayes: 11, Nays: 0 (Kammer absent, Mosley abstained from the Consent Agenda)


ORDINANCE NO. 200-2023 authorizing the Mayor, or his designee, to enter into a contract or contracts, without the formality of advertising for bids, with Sorrento Acquisition, LLC dba Royce U.S. Protection for security services in the Municipal Building; and declaring an emergency. Vote: Ayes: 12, Nays: 0.

Notices are posted on our website at least 15 days prior to the meeting date.


Suppose the Ordinance is a Conditional Use (Zoning measure). In that case, a notice is also mailed to the owners and residents of property within, contiguous to, and directly across the street from the property involved in the Ordinance (per Charter Section 34). Notice is also published in the Akron Beacon Journal.


You do not need to fill out any forms to participate. You may attend in person in Council Chambers or remotely via videoconference.


Those wishing to attend remotely need to notify the Clerk of Council as outlined in the meeting notice in order to receive the information to join remotely.
