Legislative Highlights From Monday, July 24, 2023

RESOLUTION NO. 202-2023 approving and confirming the appointments of Jessica Travis, Megan Delong, Roberta Rogers, and Andy Hillier as members of the Akron Public Art Commission; and declaring an emergency. Read more about the Public Art Commission here.

RESOLUTION NO. 218-2023 expressing support for the City of Akron, Ohio’s (the “City’s” or “Akron’s”) proposed “alternative” combined sewer overflow (“CSO”) projects in Summit County, Ohio, which will provide a greater environmental benefit for the Cuyahoga River watershed region than the Row 11.a requirement in Akron’s Long Term Control Plan Update; urging the United States Environmental Protection Agency (“EPA”) to reconsider its continued insistence in requiring Akron to spend in excess of $200,000,000 on largely idle water treatment technology, but instead move forward with more environmentally beneficial and cost-effective alternative projects; and declaring an emergency. The Budget & Finance Committee received a presentation on the ARPA Home Repair Program. You can view the full meeting here or view the presentation slides here. Akron remains the only major City in the State of Ohio that maintains a real-time public spending dashboard that communicates to whom ARPA-SLFRF dollars are going.

Ordinance authorizing a Conditional Use to install continuous curbless parking at 274 Park Street.

Ordinance authorizing a Conditional Use to establish a dog daycare at 1831 Wiltshire Road.

Notices are posted on our website at least 15 days prior to the meeting date.

Suppose the Ordinance is a Conditional Use (Zoning measure). In that case, a notice is also mailed to the owners and residents of property within, contiguous to, and directly across the street from the property involved in the Ordinance (per Charter Section 34). Notice is also published in the Akron Beacon Journal.

You do not need to fill out any forms to participate. You may attend in person in Council Chambers or remotely via videoconference.

Those wishing to attend remotely need to notify the Clerk of Council as outlined in the meeting notice in order to receive the information to join remotely.

Akron Safe Pledge Program

Akron City Council has launched the Akron Safe Pledge Program to provide funding for creating a safe dining experience during a rise in COVID-19 cases this season.

Abstain:

When a member of Council elects not to vote on a particular motion.

Rule 5.8

Abstention

Unless a conflict of interest or other legitimate reason prohibits a member of Council from voting on a particular matter, it is expected that all members will vote on all items upon which they could vote. Abstentions shall not be used by any member of Council in order to avoid taking a position on an issue.
