APS: Akron Public Schools Board of Education Decides on Start Dates
Vote also taken on athletics, extracurricular activities
Monday, August 10, 2020 - Akron Public Schools (APS), following its own extensive study that determined online learning was the most prudent choice for the start of the coming school year, now has return dates settled.

The district’s board met tonight and voted to move the date when students will begin online learning with APS teachers back two weeks.

The seven elected board members also voted on and passed a resolution (5-2) to delay for nine weeks athletics and extracurricular activities. This means a delay in athletic competition/sporting events and extracurricular activities until October 1. This includes practices.

As for the start of school, teachers’ starting date remains August 24 as it was on the original schedule decided upon earlier this year. Due to COVID-19, a good deal of deliberation has been given not only to the type of learning students should embark upon but just when that will be.

Below is the previously approved calendar and the new version, just approved.
Previous Schedule:
August 24 – First Day for Teachers
August 27 – First Day for Grades 1-6
August 28 – First Day for Grades 7-9
August 31 – First Day for K and Grades 10-12
*New APS Back-to-Learning Calendar:
August 24 – First Day for Teachers
September 9 – First Day for Grades 8-9, 12
September 10 – First Day for Grades 2-4, 10
September 11 – First Day for Grades 5-7, 11
September 14 – First Day for Grades Pre-K, K-1
*Alternate calendars were included for I PROMISE School, Akron Early College High School and the NIHF STEM High School. The board has subsequently approved changing the I PROMISE School calendar to operate during the same time as the rest of the district. The Akron Early College High School and the NIHF STEM High School calendars will remain as originally approved since each calendar coincides with The University of Akron class schedule.
