Field Work

  • Camping permits are now required. Permits are free and do not guarantee a campsite- all camping is first come, first serve. This is an acknowledgment that campers understand the rules and guidance for designated camping. To get a permit, please visit the webpage below, stop by the Eastern Sierra Visitor Center, or visit the camping information kiosks on Movie Road.
  • On November 17th, 18 people gathered to complete restoration in Lone Ranger Canyon, the most used camping area in the Alabama Hills. Participants from Death Valley NPS, Sierra Forever, Alabama Hills Stewardship Group, local communities, and visitors from LA planted nearly 100 plants in bare areas to return them to their natural state. This event was a huge success with great turn out. Keep an eye out for events in the future!
  • Fire restrictions have lifted for the season. Campfires are only permitted in existing fire rings in designated campsites within the Alabama Hills. Remember to drown and stir your fires to extinguish them. Please do not cover them with dirt as this makes it difficult to clean out the fire ring.
  • The Horseshoe Fire that occurred just south of the Alabama Hills affected BLM lands near the National Scenic Area. See below for closure information and avoid these areas while crews work to complete repairs.
  • Whitney Portal Road reconstruction is coming along and the lower portion between the 395 and Movie Road is anticipated to reopen in mid-January. Larger box culverts have been installed to accommodate higher flows in Lone Pine Creek. Upper portions of Whitney portal road are closed for snowy conditions.
  • The BLM hosted two artists in residence this year, one during the summer and one during the fall. Fall's artist was Daniel Walter, a composer from LA who created a soundscape focused on water with a veil of piano weaving throughout. Daniel's performance at C5 studios in Bishop intrigued nearly 60 audience members on November 30th. He also composed a soundscape specifically for the Arch Loop Trail in the Alabama Hills that will be available in the future to enjoy while hiking.
  • Staff have been working hard to clean out fire rings, collect trash, monitor camping behavior, update signs, and educate visitors about the importance of Leave No Trace.
