SCOTUS Ensures Fair Representation


"Today the Supreme Court affirmed the rights of Black voters in Alabama to elect the leaders of their choice," said Kathy Jones, president of the LWV of Alabama.


"The Supreme Court's decision recognizes the rights of all Americans to equal representation still stands, but the fight does not end here," said Bradley Heard of Southern Poverty Law Center.

US Supreme Court Decision Preserves Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, Ensures Continued Protections for Fair Representation

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS) upheld in a lower court ruling that Alabama must create a second majority Black congressional district in compliance with Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act. The court's decision affirms the ruling of a district court panel of three judges, which included two appointees of former President Donald Trump.

Protect Democracy Report on State Legislatures


As of May 3, 2023, there are 185 Bills introduced or under consideration in 38 states that allow state legislatures to usurp control of election results.


Voters should be awake to this persistent threat to democracy. And state legislatures should focus their efforts on bolstering the nonpartisan administration of elections.


The decisions being made in statehouses this year will help determine how the 2024 election is conducted.



Democracy Crisis in the Making - Protect Democracy

In April 2021, the States United Democracy Center and Law Forward published the first edition of A Democracy Crisis in the Making: How State Legislatures Are Politicizing, Criminalizing, and Interfering with Election Administration. That Report identified a burgeoning trend in state legislatures: bills that would increase the risk of election subversion, that the declared outcome of an election does not reflect the true choice of the voters. The trend continues in 2023.

SIG Sauer, the New Hampshire-based gunmaker embroiled in controversy surrounding its most popular handgun model, is facing new claims that one of its other weapons has a lethal defect. In a lawsuit filed June 6, the family of Dalton Harrell alleges that the 21-year-old was killed when a SIG Sauer pistol discharged after it was dropped at a golf course in Bainbridge, Georgia, in 2021.
