Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College Faculty Member Coaches Robotics Team To Victories

Dr. Qiaoying "Joy" Zhou, an associate professor in the Alamo Colleges - Northwest Vista College (NVC) mathematics and engineering department, has served as a coach for the MAKbots robotics team for several years. Team success grew after Coach Joy joined the group, and the team gained more experience. The team competed at the First Lego League's Alamo Regionals and advanced to the national level twice. They also joined the First Tech Challenge (FTC), a competition designed for students in grades 8-12. 

This season, team MAKbots participated in the North San Antonio FTC League. The MAKbots advanced to the regional championships and received four awards.  Dr. Zhou was supported by other NVC faculty and staff in support of the team:

* The NVC Saturday Children's Enrichment Program trained team members who earned certificates at the robotics classes.
 
* Workforce's Dr. John Grillo helped support a community holiday concert at which MAKbots performed.

* Workforce's Dean Pat Fontenot helped conduct mock interviews for the team as an experienced FTC judge.
 
* Information and Communication Technology's Director Felix Salinas volunteered as a judge at the League Championship.


Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College Children's
Library Offers Free Programs for the Community
Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College's recently renovated Children's Library is now open to the public and offers free programs.


The newly renovated Children's Library at Alamo Colleges - Palo Alto College has opened its doors to the community and scheduled free community programs during the spring semester. All Children's Library community events are free and open to the public.

Community events during the Spring 2016 term at the Children's Library include
themed story and craft times, such as Chinese New Year and National Poetry Month. Other events include the popular Play-Doh Parties and Family Lego Nights, where families compete to build the best Lego city.

Located in the Ozuna Library and Learning Center at Palo Alto College, the 1,300 square-foot Children's Library features a sizeable collection of books for children of all ages, kid-friendly furniture, computers equipped with children's resources, Nooks loaded with eBooks for children, craft supplies, a digital monitor for viewing children's programs and a whiteboard for children to express their artistic abilities.

Alamo Colleges' nursing graduates may be eligible for a $1,000 scholarship to pursue a bachelor's or master's degree in nursing
at a four-year university.

Alamo Colleges' Scholarships Alllow Nursing Grads To Continue Higher Education

Alamo Colleges' nursing graduates may be eligible to receive a 2016 Methodist Healthcare Ministries scholarship award. Applications are being solicited for 41 $1,000 scholarships from graduates of the Alamo Colleges - San Antonio College and Alamo Colleges - St. Philip's College nursing programs who are enrolled in a bachelor's or master's nursing degree program. The Alamo Colleges goal is to award at least 21 of the scholarships during the Spring/Summer 2016 semester. 

The scholarships are funded by a generous grant from Methodist Healthcare Ministries of South Texas, Inc., which has contributed a total of $266,000 in scholarships since 2014. A total of 184 Alamo Colleges' nursing graduates, incuding the 41 this year, will have benefitted from the scholarships.
