As our state attempts to return to normal amid the global pandemic, MoDOT is dealing with a dramatic surge in work zone crashes despite decreased traffic volumes.
Already this year, 39 truck/trailer-mounted attenuators have been hit in work zones across the state. That compares with 19 hits at this time last year. That’s a staggering 100% increase at a time when traffic volumes have decreased by 50%.
These numbers aren’t just overwhelming, they’re also completely avoidable if drivers would pay attention and not drive distracted. There are many things that can take a driver's focus off the road. One of the most dangerous is using a cellphone.
