Parent Policy Council (PPC) and Nurturing Couples and Parenting families participated in an exciting educational trip to Alcatraz Island, hosted by the San Francisco Recreation and Parks Department.
Families rode the ferry from Pier 33 to Alcatraz Island, explored, and learned the history of the former federal penitentiary and of the Native American occupation of Alcatraz Island in 1969, when Indigenous activists claimed the land for Native rights. The trip provided families with time to strengthen parent-child relationships and build connections with other parents.
Several families shared despite living in San Francisco for many years, they had never visited Alcatraz due to time constraints or cost. Families were grateful to the MNC Early Care and Education team for this opportunity and meaningful for learning, connection, and well-being. When families are united and supported, children grow stronger.
