Alderman Reilly Presents Resolution Designating Navy Pier as the Unofficial Start of Route 66

This week, Alderman Reilly presented a Resolution (R2025-0021524) designating Navy Pier as the unofficial starting point of historic Route 66 during a sign dedication ceremony. The resolution symbolically extends Route 66 from Navy Pier to Santa Monica Pier, though the route’s official eastern terminus remains on Michigan Avenue near the Art Institute of Chicago.


The Resolution was adopted unanimously by the City Council. Alderman Reilly marked the occasion at Navy Pier alongside civic and community leaders to celebrate the Pier, Harry Caray’s Restaurant, and the enduring legacy of Route 66.

"No Kings" Rally and March This Saturday

in Grant Park

This Saturday, March 28, a large gathering is expected at Butler Field in Grant Park, with a rally and march scheduled to begin around 1:30pm.


At this time, the Chicago Police Department has not announced any street closures; however, rolling closures may be implemented as needed to accommodate large crowds.


OEMC and CPD personnel will be on site to assist with traffic and pedestrian flow. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by downloading the OEMC Chicago App or signing up for Notify Chicago.

Get Behind the Vest Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser This Sunday

On Sunday, March 29, Alderman Conway (34th Ward) is hosting a pancake breakfast fundraiser to raise money for bulletproof vests for the Chicago Police Department. The event runs from 8am - 12pm and will be held at Saint Ignatius College Prep (1076 West Roosevelt Road). CPD officers are provided their first bulletproof vest upon graduation from the academy, but after wear and tear, officers must pay for their next vest out of their own pockets. Last year, this initiative raised over $120,000 for the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation to purchase high-quality bulletproof vests for officers.

Street Sweeping Begins April 1

Street Sweeping across Chicago will begin on Wednesday, April 1. Street Sweeping in the 42nd Ward runs April 1 - November 20. To see the sweeping schedule for your area, first find your sector on this map, then check your sector’s active sweeping days on the schedule, posted here.


Residents are encouraged to track street sweepers in real time using the online Sweeper Tracker.

Alderman Reilly Authorizes Menu Funds for Resurfacing in Lakeshore East

Alderman Reilly has authorized a portion of his Aldermanic Menu Funds to resurface several streets in the Lakeshore East neighborhood. Starting Tuesday, April 7, CDOT will begin the following resurfacing projects:


  • Lower Michigan, from Lower Wacker to Lower Stetson (Projected Start Date: April 7)
  • South Water, from Stetson to Columbus (Projected Start Date: April 7)
  • Stetson, from Wacker Drive to Randolph (Projected Start Date: April 9)
  • Randolph, from Beaubien, to Columbus (Projected Start Date: April 9)
  • Randolph, from Field to Harbor (Projected Start Date: April 10)
  • Harbor, from Harbor Service Drive to Randolph (Projected Start Date: April 10)


Information on street closures and detour routes will be shared in future Reilly Reports. All projected start dates are dependent on weather conditions and material availability. Resurfacing can take several weeks as CDOT must first remove the top layer of asphalt before pouring a new top layer.

42nd Ward Traffic Closures & Construction Projects

State Street Bridge Reopened Today, March 27

Today, March 27, CDOT officially reopened the State Street Bridge to pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The bridge was closed in April 2026 and was scheduled to be completed in December 2025, but construction delayed due to material shortages and weather conditions. Among other improvements, the bridge's viaduct and sidewalk structure were replaced and upgraded. Helicopter Lift:

Willis Tower

On Sunday, March 29, a helicopter lift will take place at Willis Tower (233 S Wacker). From 8am - 12pm, the area bounded by Adams St, Franklin St, Van Buren St, and Wacker Dr will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic. CPD personnel will be in place at the surrounding streets to warn and redirect motorists.


Crane Lift:

840 N Michigan

On Saturday, April 4, a crane lift will take place at 840 N Michigan to replace rooftop units. During the lift, the following streets and sidewalks will be closed from 8am - 4pm on 4/4:


  • Pearson St, from Rush St to Tower Ct
  • North sidewalk on Pearson St. from Tower Ct to Michigan Ave


Flaggers and signage will be in place at the corner of Rush St and Pearson St, and at the corner of Chicago Ave and Tower Ct to notify motorists and pedestrians of the closures ahead. In the event of inclement weather on Saturday, April 4, this lift will be rescheduled to a future date.


Bridge Closures:

The following bridges will be closed next week to conduct testing in advance of the summer boating season. All bridges will be closed from 9:30am to 2:30pm on their listed date, except for the Eisenhower Expressway Bridge, which will only be closed overnight until 5am. Motorists and pedestrians will be redirected while each bridge is closed. Please see the upcoming closures below:


  • Eisenhower Expressway Bridge (overnight)
  • Saturday, March 28 at 11:59pm - Sunday, March 29 at 5am
  • Dearborn Street Bridge - Monday, March 30
  • Randolph Street Bridge - Wednesday, April 1


Bally's Utility Work - Grand Avenue

To prepare for the new permanent Bally's Casino, utility work will be completed on Grand Ave in River North. As a result of this construction, Grand Ave, between Union Ave and Kingsbury St, will be reduced to one lane in each direction. These closures will be in place until May 2026.


Canal St Reconstruction

Canal St is currently undergoing reconstruction. During the work, the east half of Canal St, between Adams and Madison, will be blocked, and parking on Canal between Adams and Madison will be prohibited. Two lanes on the west side of Canal St will be maintained for northbound traffic. These closures will last until late 2026. Pedestrian traffic will be maintained on the west side of Canal St. Access to driveways and commercial loading zones will be maintained. CTA bus reroutes will be minimal as a result of the work.


Ohio / Ontario Feeder Ramp

As reported in a previous Reilly Report, the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) is completing phase 3 of its work on the Ohio / Ontario Street Feeder Ramps. The project is anticipated to be completed in summer 2026. IDOT's press release on these closures can be found here.


Lake Street Bascule Bridge Construction Update

Work continues on the Lake Street Bascule Bridge. The sidewalk on the southwest corner of the bridge will remain closed until summer 2026.The Lake Street Bascule Bridge is expected to re-open by spring 2028. For the detour map, click here (note: the Canal St detour listed is no longer in effect).


Bridge Construction Updates

As reported in a past Reilly Report, construction continues on several downtown bridges, and Alderman Reilly has expressed his frustration with CDOT for a lack of coordination and planning. The State Street Bridge is now open, and the approximate completion date for the Chicago Avenue Bridge is January 2027, and the Lake Street Bridge will be completed by spring 2028.


600 N Michigan Façade Work

Traffic lane closures are in effect on Ohio St between Michigan Ave and Rush St. All closures are scheduled to end by April 2026. Currently, two lanes of traffic are closed on Ohio St. In addition, the west sidewalk and curb lane near the storefront on Michigan Ave will be closed, and pedestrians will be rerouted until April 2026. Signage and barriers are in place to alert drivers and pedestrians.
