Mayor Johnson's $830 Million Bond Deal

Passes City Council

This week at City Council, Alderman Reilly voted “no” on the Mayor’s $830 million bond deal. Unfortunately, the bond deal passed with a 26-to-23 margin. To hear Alderman Reilly’s comments during City Council, please click here.

Mayor Johnson’s irresponsible plan allows the city to borrow the money but make zero payments until 2027, followed by interest-only payments lasting through 2045. The total repayment costs on the $830 million in bonds will be approximately $2 billion. This deal comes after two major credit agencies downgraded Chicago’s credit rating to just above junk status. Click here to read S&P Global Ratings’ report.

Similar to Mayor Johnson’s 2025 Budget, which Alderman Reilly also strongly opposed, this poorly structured “deal” relies on temporary fixes without considering the long-term impact on taxpayers.

The bond deal is fiscally irresponsible, especially after the city’s credit downgrade and with the Mayor’s 2025 budget increasing taxes and fees on working families.
