Curfew Ordinance Vote Delayed Until June 18

On Tuesday, May 20, the Public Safety Committee voted to pass Alderman Hopkins and Reilly’s curfew ordinance (SO2025-0016732) out of the committee. The ordinance moved to a full city council vote on Wednesday, May 21. In the Council meeting, the ordinance was “deferred and published,” delaying a full vote until the next City Council meeting on June 18.

The ordinance allows the CPD Superintendent and the Deputy Mayor for Public Safety to declare a curfew for minors when groups of twenty or more have the potential to cause a danger to public safety. Alderman Reilly looks forward to the Council passing the ordinance in June to give CPD the necessary tools to keep downtown residents safe.

Statement from Alderman Reilly

Regarding May 18 Shooting

“Early Sunday morning, a man was shot multiple times while sitting in his car in the parking lot at 319 West Ontario Street. After the shooting, the victim exited his vehicle and walked to Franklin and Erie where he collapsed. The victim is in critical condition at Northwestern Hospital.

While targeted acts of violence like this can be difficult to prevent, the late-night activity in this area is predictable and requires a more coordinated strategy. This type of violence in the heart of River North is incredibly concerning. It’s still early in the season and temperatures are mild—we need to get ahead of this now.

I’ll be meeting with the 18th District Commander to discuss CPD's late-night deployment strategy. The Commander has already committed to assigning officers from the Critical Incident Response (CIRT) and Entertainment Venue (EVT) Teams to the area—an encouraging step in the right direction.”
