by Pastor Donna Miller-Wire

The meme on my Facebook said, "Everyone wants to the change the world, but no one wants to change the toilet paper roll." That feisty post made me laugh. The "least of these" are the toilet paper roll-changers. I have learned and continue to believe the Bible shows us that the least likely are the most likely, placed by God to make a difference. According to my third grade Sunday school teacher, "God loves to change the world by answering the adventurous prayers of His people."
In his book, Dangerous Prayers, pastor and author Craig Groeschel says, "Prayer moves the heart of God – but some prayers move Him more than others. He wants more for us than a tepid faith and half-hearted routines at the dinner table. He's called you to a life of courage, not comfort."

I invite you to join me in praying adventurous prayers.
Recently in my reading, I came across Jeremiah 8:21. "My heart is crushed because my dear people are being crushed. I go about crying and grieving. I am overwhelmed with dismay."

Jeremiah was having an emotional meltdown for those who were suffering. I asked myself, do I grieve for those who are being crushed? In 2021 let's continue to ask God to break our hearts for what breaks his. When we keep praying that kind of prayer, we become fueled with unbelievable empathy to make a difference for Jesus, who seemed to pray no small prayers. Jesus prayed adventurous prayers, the kind that are simple, and deeply emotional, and come with a price.
Like Jeremiah, we pray for answers to what causes grief for our family, but also for our geographic family. We pray for the sick to be well, help for the addicted, freedom for the oppressed, but the answer might mean I have to give, lift or lead. It might mean I have to assist, donate time, be a listener. We could be led to do some random act of kindness or reach out to assist a stranger; babysit for a worn-out mom; give up part of our own grocery list to feed hungry kids; mentor someone who has been praying for a mentor to come along. It's dangerous because it takes our time, our energy, our help. Aldersgate has a stake in these prayers because we live and serve right here in the midst of such grieving. I love that our Aldersgate@Prayer Team* meets by Zoom every Wednesday night at 7 pm to pray adventurous prayers.
When God posed a question in Isaiah 6:8, "Who will go as my messenger." Isaiah jumped up and said, "Send me!" You see, I've learned in my own journey that when my heart truly breaks for those in need, it is then that I am motivated to make a lasting impact. Then I start saying, "Send me." Through the tears, I thank God for answering my adventurous prayers.

Right now, ask God to open our eyes to those who are crushed. Pray the adventurous Prayer. Then, like me, wipe your eyes and start helping. Today is the perfect day to change the world.
