GOOD FRIDAY

It is a blessing to have our friend and my mentor, Rev. John Van Valin, provide the pastor’s message on this Good Friday, 2021.
Pastor Donna
Why? Have you ever asked that question? Of course. Except, after being awake for about 33 hours straight? After enduring five mock trials? After having suffered a severe, inhumane beating? After being “sold out” (as the Chinese put it)—betrayed and denied? After nails driven through hands and feet? After nail-like thorns jammed on your head? After literally carrying the weight of the world’s sin on your shoulders and in your heart? Matthew 27:46 tells us that at “about the ninth hour Jesus cried out, ‘My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?’”

In our excruciating pain and hopelessness, have we not also cried out, “God, why have you forgotten me?” Experiencing our personal pain, though, who of us can even begin to imagine the horror of being truly forsaken by God? It had never happened before. They had ALWAYS existed TOGETHER. Never out of touch for a nanosecond. And now? Of all times! And then imagine the loss of the Father. The depth of Christ’s cry is so deep and penetrates so far into our own souls; how can we even entertain the chasm the Father saw and felt. The Bible teaches that this entire universe is held together by God’s power. And now that’s short-circuited with his “one and only begotten son” of whom he had said, “this is my son with whom I am well pleased.” In those moments, something happened in the universe none of us can fully comprehend—the offering of Christ as a sacrifice for sin, for all time, and for everyone who confesses Christ as Lord.

Perhaps one of the small lessons from Jesus’ “Why” question emerges: “He identifies with us when we cry, “Why.” But he far more than identifies; he offers...hope beyond the suffering. Redemption through suffering. Most of all, life beyond the grave! During this Holy Week and every day, when we are prone to ask God, “why?”—can we see beyond Christ’s “why” and then beyond our “why” as well? May it be so. Amen.

PARTY ON THE PORCH
RESURRECTION SUNDAY, APRIL 4
IS PARTY ON THE PORCH SUNDAY!
Come join the celebration!

If you call Aldersgate "home," consider this your invitation to be an official "AFMC Greeter" and join me (Pastor Donna) in welcoming each guest with a friendly welcome and an invitation to return.

We'll also be saying, "Good Goodbye and Happy Next Adventure!" to Pastor Emily Wagler after the worship service. Your caring words and gift cards are welcome!
GROWING & GROWING
The Aldersgate English-speaking congregation, will be moving into the big sanctuary on Sunday, April 18 at 10:30 am and we will be hosting a second service in Swahili, led by Olemwene Asende, in the upper sanctuary.

First Chinese FMC is continuing to meet via Zoom, but when they return for in-person worship they will meet in one of Aldersgate's additional meeting spaces.

It's blessing that the Aldersgate church facility can serve a multicultural community in three languages. Pray all services are effective and explosive with the Good News of the gospel.
RECOMMENDED BOOK
The Horse and His Boy is the third book in the seven-part series by C.S. Lewis, called "The Chronicles of Narnia." Narnia is a magical, mystical place where our faith journey is played out with great detail.

This book is my favorite in the series and tells the story of two runaways, who on a desperate journey, meet and join forces. Though the runaways are only looking to escape their harsh and narrow lives, they soon find themselves at the center of a terrible battle. The battle will decide their fate as well as that of Narnia.

The book is available in multiple formats besides print on Amazon, including radio theater recordings or for free on Amazon Prime. It's a powerful read as both a fairy tale and as the symbolism of our relationship with Christ.

NEW SERIES - VIVID
Someone recently wrote that America has some “flabby Christians following a sedentary year of quarantine, both physically and spiritually.” With this as the backdrop, I'm going to start a new series called "Vivid: Clarity for Changing Times." It's a series on health and hope meant for newcomers and it will provide a fresh perspective for seasoned saints.

We'll explore the messy side of the the transformation process and how to love and serve others. We'll also open the parking lot for some scheduled hours of walking and playtime! Be listening and watching for more information.

COMMUNITY GARDEN
The wind was gusting, and the temperature was cold as we braced ourselves and blessed this year's garden and gardeners – those who will be engaging in tending our 2021 harvest. With three gardens on the grounds this year, volunteers are needed to stop by and weed, water, or both. The goal is that one or more people from each Small Group or Sunday School group will tend to the garden each week! Contact Janice.Jordan@aldersgatefmc.org in the office to get on the Garden Calendar.
