Alert regarding suspicious "CE" sales pitch
The MOA has received a number of calls and emails regarding online courses that advertise CME, targeting osteopathic physicians. Some of the emails claim their "CE" courses "...meet the Michigan Board of Osteopathic Medicine & Surgery," while the courses are template sessions used in mulitple states that have requirements that vary from state to state.
We urge MOA members to please use caution when purchasing CME courses online. The MOA has developed an online Learning Management System that offers hundreds of hours of authorized CME sessions, using the same, trusted speakers as our in-person programs.
The MOA is connected to the physicians and educators that are leaders in the osteopathic profession. The MOA maintains strong connections to the American Osteopathic Association and the licensing and regulatory agencies in Michigan. Our focus is on Michigan and the licensing issues specific to practicing in our state.
The MOA. A trusted resource for continuing medical education since 1898.

Even if you have never served as a delegate before, the MOA welcomes you to join at this most important event. Contact your component society to learn more about how you can be a delegate or submit resolutions.

Any MOA member in good standing may author a resolution; however, introduction of resolutions to the House of Delegates is limited to delegates, alternate-seated delegates, component associations, MOA Departments, Councils, or Board of Trustees. The Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) values the involvement of interns and residents. The MOA Board of Trustees includes positions on the board for a student and a resident. The MOA Council of Interns and Residents (CIR) offers opportunities to learn from those before you and pass that knowledge on to those who follow. The CIR provides a network of support on issues such as physician wellness, preparing for employment, starting your practice, contract negotiation, healthcare policy and legislative advocacy.
Meetings for the CIR work around busy schedules and focus on educational and social events as well as advocacy and mentorship. Joining the CIR provides great benefits from medical school through residency.

As flu season begins, Michigan health officials urge public to get vaccinated despite ‘fatigue’
An alarming decrease in vaccinations statewide has primary care physicians and public health leaders fearing the worst about the health threat on its way to Michigan this fall and winter: influenza.
Members of the Michigan Academy of Family Physicians spoke Monday during an online round table with the media about common influenza misconceptions and urged vaccination for babies, toddlers, teens, adults and the elderly.
“As flu season approaches, vaccine fatigue remains strong and we need to remember that flu can be fatal for all ages,” said Dr. Beena Nagappala, president, Michigan Academy of Family Physicians and medical director of community health at Ascension Southeast Michigan.
Flu season started severely last year, with an early hospitalization peak in October 2022, and a season high in cases in December, officials said.
“Influenza is not the stomach flu and it’s also different than the common cold. It’s a respiratory illness and which is what makes it so dangerous,” said Nagappala who is already seeing cases of flu in her practice.

Meridian Encourages Renewing Medicare Coverage
Meridian, in partnership with MDHHS, encourages Michiganders to renew their Medicaid coverage.
For the first time since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, people who have had their Medicaid insurance automatically renewed each year will have to reapply to continue their coverage.
Eligible Medicaid recipients should make sure as soon as possible that their address, phone number and email address are up to date at newmibridges.michigan.gov or call their local MDHHS office. They can also locate organizations that can assist them by searching community partners. MDHHS renewal packet forms should be completed, signed and returned by the due date.
Those no longer found eligible for Medicaid may qualify for other health plans. Meridian is working closely with MDHHS to smoothly transition those that may lose Medicaid coverage. Meridian is aligned with the Department’s goal to ensure as many Michiganders are insured and has offered it’s Ambetter plan as a safe landing for qualified members.
