What Success Means In This Position
This position is a 10-month, exempt level position. The role of the Head Football Coach is to be responsible for coaching, character development, and providing direction to student athletes, so that they might achieve a high level of skill as well as an appreciation for discipline, sportsmanship and teamwork in football. This job requires you to interact thoughtfully and respectfully with student athletes, fellow coaches, staff, parents and community, as well as following the mission of the school. Positive communication strategies, organizational skills, and safety awareness are key requirements. As a head football coach, your primary job will be to provide expert training for athletes. You will be assisting in their skills development, and ensuring peak performance and fitness are achieved during crucial times. We are seeking to find someone that has these skills and the ability to incorporate fundraising in the program, along with engaging and cultivating the community to create a family atmosphere with his/her program.
Position Description & Expectations
Administrative Duties:
● Have a daily academic plan that improves student learning that will impact the school’s overall academic achievements for all student-athletes.
● Establish a daily tracking system for student-athlete attendance and expectations off the field and throughout the entire school year.
● Know the School’s Leadership expectations and vision for all students.
● Assist teachers throughout the building with any issues that may arise with discipline and other issues that may interrupt the daily operations of the school.
● Be a visible and impactful employee throughout the school and community.
● Keep accurate and organized records of student-athletes academic progress throughout the year (spring, summer,and fall).
● Work hand-in-hand with guidance counselors, so student-athletes can stay on course with academic requirements for a successful career after graduation.
Coaching Responsibilities:
● Conducting research and analyzing previous games to develop game plans, tactics, techniques, formations, and strategies.
● Organizing and scheduling tryouts to secure potential players.
● Analyzing assistant coaches and individual player abilities, strengths, and weaknesses, and factoring these into the gameplay and strategy sessions.
● Follow LHSAA rules and keep up with changes for organizational compliance.
● Ensure safety standards are in place in all facilities.
● Advise athletic director of maintenance needs prior to sport events.
● Ensures that proper cleaning, storage, and maintenance of all athletic equipment and uniforms.
● Travel with student athletes to and from games.
● Ensures that proper forms(s) (insurance, attendance, medical) are obtained and current.
● Checks and secures all office, storage room, outside doors, locker rooms and all lights after the last player leaves after games and practices.
● Provides guidance and support for the Junior Varsity Football Program.
● Completes and submits District Injury Report for any student injured within 24 hours.
● Consults with the Athletic Director regarding any off-season training programs.
● Work with the Athletic Director to develop goals for program improvement.
● Recruit players, organize tryouts, select team members while working with the athletic director to ensure eligibility of athletes.
● Decide player positions, organize practices (indoor and outdoor), and keep up with the season schedule (home and away games) for planning in conjunction with the Athletic Director.
● Keep attendance records for all games, practices, and events.
● Guide players’ performance; instruct players on proper techniques, while fostering teamwork and mentor team players.
● Set up tutoring schedules and discipline programs as necessary.
● Provide leadership to assistant coaches and team members for direction and guidance.
● Identify the football program’s strengths and weaknesses for changes as needed.
● Confirm arrangements timely with the Athletic Director for all transportation for games.
● Involve students and parents (as appropriate) in athletic development for community support.
● Assigns duties to all assistant coaches under his/her jurisdiction; including pre-season practice sessions.
● Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students.
● Models a sportsman‐like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
● Maintains appropriate certifications and training hours as required.
Other Responsibilities:
● Manage the funds allocated to the sport program in accordance with district and state guidelines and school activities.
○ Manage the athletic budgets.
○ See that budget allocations for programs are tied to coaching objectives and are consistent with established department priorities.
○ Supervise fund raising activities as needed for the athletic program.
○ Adheres to financial policies of the Algiers Charter in regard to the collection and disbursement of money, expenses, and receipts.
● Communicate with the public about the athletic program in the high school and establish positive community rapport.
○ Work with the Athletic Director and Director of Communications & Marketing to use the news media effectively to ensure good coverage of athletic programs.
○ Communicate with athletes’ parents regarding costs, schedules, and expectations
○ Work toward maintaining professionalism within the staff in their relationships with the public.
○ Encourage community participation through attendance at games
○ Relate information concerning program to the central office for timely communication
○ Encourage football team members to participate in community service projects
● Become a community liaison
○ Utilize clear and meaningful oral and written expression.
○ Contribute to the vision of the school and assists the principal in maintaining focus and momentum for achieving the vision and mission of the school
○ Interpret the mission of the school to the community through direct involvement, public relations programs, and work closely with the administration to promote the school’s vision and mission.
○ Assist in the use of school/community resources to enhance the quality of school programs, including those resources available through business and industry.
○ Assist in the development of specific program goals and objectives which are aligned with the mission and vision and which appropriately meet the needs of the students.
Qualifications
● Bachelor’s Degree, required.
● Louisiana High School Teaching Certificate, required.
● Certification in CPR, required.
● Be employed by the school as a full time teacher.
● The Head Football coach must:
○ Be familiar with rules and regulations of the sport;
○ Possess strong communication and problem-solving skills;
○ Be highly organized and innovative;
○ Demonstrate ability to motivate and delegate;
○ Understand how to improve both individual players and the team as a whole;
○ Possess good analytical skills.
