Loudoun Fire and Rescue Hosts Demo Day
On October 19th, Loudoun County Fire and Rescue hosted Demo Day, which showed off investments into state-of-the art training and equipment that our first responders use to save lives. The Loudoun County Combined Fire and Rescue System serves a population of 434,326 people and 520 square miles across greater Loudoun County, and is made up of 729 career staff and 1,277 volunteers who respond to incidents across the county. In FY22 the department responded to over 33,700 incidents, including 8,305 fire-related incidents.

During Fire Prevention Month in October, it was inspiring to see all the ways that our firefighters are trained to encounter every situation. With a state-of-the-art training facility, both our career firefighters and volunteers are trained to be the best of the best. Demonstrations included putting out a propane fire, saving an individual from a car crash with a simulated airlift, and showcasing how the K-9 unit tracks down fire accelerants and explosives during investigations. I will always support investments into our fantastic fire and rescue department and programs.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month the Board honored Breast Cancer Awareness Month with Proclamation at the October 18th Business Meeting. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Americans are diagnosed with breast cancer, the second most common cancer in women. Getting annual mammograms and regularly doing self-exams once per month can be lifesaving.

Metro Washington Region Surpasses Climate Goals

During the October Board of Directors Meeting for the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments I was thrilled to learn that the Washington metro region surpassed our 2020 climate goals. These goals, which were developed in accordance with international research on climate change trends, were to reduce greenhouse gas emissions for the region by 20% in comparison to 2005 levels. Despite population growth and increases in commercial floor area, a range of factors and actions reduced emissions throughout the region. Significant contributions to reduced emissions were growth in green energy in our energy grid and reduced car emissions through lower vehicle miles traveled.

During that meeting, I cast a vote in favor of a Resolution Endorsing Regional Climate Mitigation and Resiliency Goals which recommended aggressive cross-sectoral action by federal, state, and local governments to achieve the 2030 goal of 50% reduction in greenhouse gases below 2005 levels. As part of this effort, I will work hard to ensure Loudoun County leads by example in reducing emissions as a result of government operations and encourage clean energy adoption across the county. We will continue doing our part at the local level to mitigate and reverse the effects of climate change.
Diversifying the Loudoun Economy

I attended ribbon cuttings for multiple businesses opening operations or celebrating milestones of achievement in Loudoun County this month! On October 7th we celebrated the ribbon cutting of Black Hog BBQ in Ashburn.

On October 17th I joined Broad Run Supervisor Sylvia Glass to celebrate the 5-year anniversary of You've Got Maids in Sterling. It's always wonderful to join our colleagues from the Loudoun Chamber and Loudoun Economic Development to highlight local businesses.
Affordable Connectivity Program Application

The Loudoun Broadband Alliance has been publicizing an opportunity to earn free or reduced-price internet through the federal government's Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP). Eligibility in the program is determined by household income thresholds or participation in certain government assistance programs.

Broad Run Farms Waterline Update
My office recently reached out to the Department of General Services regarding an update on the project to construct a waterline to Broad Run Farms. Loudoun Water stated in its most recent update that they are prepared to have construction bid documents ready by December 31, 2022. Loudoun Water will continue coordinating with EPA project planners on their construction timelines. The EPA has begun acquiring easements for their portion of the water system. The expected construction start date is late spring or early summer 2023.
2022 Loudoun County Youth Survey
The Loudoun County Advisory Commission on Youth is conducting a survey on youth to inform the Commission's annual report to the Board of Supervisors. The survey covers activities and interests, mental health and stress management, online access and activity, and drug and alcohol use. It takes about 10 minutes and is open to both young people (age 13-22) and parents/guardians.

The survey is available in both English and Spanish here.
Land Use Applications
The legislative land use re-zoning process can be complicated. To make the process more understandable, my office asked county staff to create a flowchart with the steps required in a land use application process. With this chart, you can now see where each potential project is, along the process.

Additional details are available at Loudoun's Online Land Applications (LOLA) by searching for the name or application number, of each application.
