Updates from This Week's Business Meetings

This week the Board of Supervisors held a Special Business Meeting on Monday in addition to a regularly scheduled Business Meeting on Tuesday. Please see below for updates from both meetings:

Recap of Monday's Special Business Meeting:

On Monday, the Board of Supervisors held a special meeting and directed staff to amend the county's Zoning Ordinance policies relating to rural uses and standards in Western Loudoun (WLRUS). This follows a months-long public process in which stakeholders representing agriculture and conservation, business and tourism, and residential communities provided feedback and informed the recommendations made by the Board's Transportation and Land Use Committee.

Though limited to the County’s zoning and land use authority, topics of discussion ranged from rural recreation, agricultural processing, farm wineries, limited breweries and distilleries, bed and breakfasts, tenant housing, food service and protection of natural resources, all of which are key to our rich agricultural and visitor-serving economy.

The Board of Supervisors’ adoption of the Resolution of Intent to Amend (ROIA) the Zoning Ordinance will be followed by a Zoning Ordinance Amendment to be drafted and brought back to the Board of Supervisors for final approval in 2027.

Two Initiatives Discussed at Tuesday's Business Meeting:

Loudoun County Board Approves Briskman-Saines Initiative to Explore Rent Supplement Program

This week, the Board of Supervisors approved my and Supervisor Koran Saines' Board Member Initiative directing county staff to evaluate and provide recommendations to implement a short-term limited rent supplement program that improves housing stability for cost-burdened residents.

The proposed program would provide targeted, short-term assistance to eligible Loudoun County renters who are at risk of displacement due to rising rents, financial instability, change in employment status, or other circumstances. In developing recommendations, county staff will consider criteria such as displacement risk and a requirement for participants to attend employment or financial counseling.

“It is clear that working class Loudouners are struggling with higher costs from inflation, rising gas prices, and increased housing expenses,” said Supervisor Briskman. “As the data center capital of the world, Loudoun has benefited from extraordinary economic growth, but that prosperity must also translate into stability for the residents and workers who keep this county running. When residents are precariously housed, the humane thing to do is help stabilize them before they become displaced. It is much more expensive to assist someone after displacement. This should be seen as an investment in homelessness prevention.”

Successful 2026 Biking with Briskman Event

We couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to hold our community bike ride on Sunday! We took the group around Smith Circle, University Commerce Center, spent some time around Bles Park, and made our way across the bridge on GW Blvd before heading back to Route 7 Brewing.

I am beyond grateful for our sponsors and participants for making this second annual event a success. Thank you to Lisa Campbell from BikeLoudoun for joining me in this endeavor once again and Route 7 Brewing for welcoming us to use their space and for being amazing hosts. Thank you to Tyler Oneal from Maverick Bikes for coming out to do bike checks ahead of the ride, sharing his vast cycling expertise, and even participating in the ride with the group! A huge thank you to Abby from Loudoun County PRCS team for coming to Bles Park to meet our group and discuss all of the park's amazing amenities.

NVFS Celebration of Service at
The Barns at Wolf Trap

It was a great pleasure to join Northern Virginia Family Services annual Celebration of Service this past weekend. At more than 100 years old, NVFS provides critical support for families, children and the elderly.

I was particularly thrilled to learn that their child care center in Ashburn is opening very soon and that the management of the county’s Childcare Fee Reduction Program is going smoothly. That fee reduction program using American Rescue Plan Act funds originated from my initiative last term and will transition to be funded locally this July!

Celebrating the 30th Anniversary of
Falcons Landing Retirement Community

Earlier this week, I had the honor of touring the Falcons Landing Retirement Community in Algonkian with their COO Jon Garber. I also presented the Resolution of Recognition, on behalf of the Board of Supervisors, to celebrate their 30th anniversary! I truly appreciated having the chance to meet and chat with some of the residents, staff, and leadership team, and join them to celebrate 30 years of service to the senior community in Loudoun.

Falcons Landing Retirement Community is a living community that started in May 1996 by the Air Force Retired Officers Community (AFROC). AFROC's dream started as a place where those who served our nation could relax and savor life to the fullest. While most of their residents are retired military veterans and their spouses, Falcons Landing now accepts anyone over the age of 62. Falcons Landing provides state-of-the-art nursing and memory assisted living facilities, a community center with a multitude of recreational activities, and world-class wellness & dining services for all their residents.

Three Things to Know About the LIV Golf Tournament This Weekend

The LIV Golf League is holding a golf tournament this week at the Trump National Golf Club in Loudoun County. The event is expected to attract thousands of spectators to the Sterling and Lowes Island areas of the county starting today, Thursday, May 7th through Sunday, May 10th.

While I have already spoken with LCSO on mitigating traffic impacts to the community, please be aware of any closures or slowdowns in the area. Here are the top three things residents should know regarding the event:

1. What to Do if You Are Planning to Attend

Everything residents need to know about attending is posted on the league’s website.
Loudoun County government has no role in organizing the LIV Golf tournament; however, the county is working to raise awareness about the potential impacts in the surrounding community, such as increased traffic.
Anyone who is interested in attending should visit the league’s website to purchase tickets and to learn more about security protocols at the event as well as the rules for spectators to follow.

2. Parking Availability

There will be no general parking at the tournament site (20391 Lowes Island Boulevard) or in the surrounding neighborhood. All parking for the event will be off-site and visitors will ride shuttle buses to the golf course.
Anyone who plans to attend should follow all parking instructions from the event organizers, which are posted on the league’s website.
General parking for those who plan to attend the event will be at the Dulles Airport Economy Lot (1 Saarinen Circle, Sterling), where parking for the tournament will be free with paid admission. Shuttle buses will be provided from the parking lot to the tournament site.

3. Anticipate Increased Traffic in the Area

Residents of the neighborhoods around the golf course should be aware of the potential for increased road congestion in the area due to event-related traffic, including shuttle buses.
Law enforcement will be monitoring traffic around the event venue, particularly along Algonkian Parkway and Lowes Island Boulevard. Vehicular traffic to some neighborhood roads near the intersection of Lowes Island Boulevard and Dunkirk Square will be restricted to residents only, who have been issued a special credential.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office routinely publishes alerts regarding road closures and other traffic-related incidents via Alert Loudoun. Anyone may sign up for the “Loudoun Traffic and Road Closures” category of Alert Loudoun to receive text and email updates by visiting loudoun.gov/alert.

The tournament is scheduled to wrap up the evening of Sunday, May 10th.

Adoption Fees Waived at Loudoun County Animal Shelter - May 8-10

Loudoun County Animal Services (LCAS) will host a fee-waived pet adoption event Friday May 8 through Sunday, May 10, 2026, at the Loudoun County Animal Shelter (42225 Adoption Drive in Leesburg). Adoption fees will be waived for all available pets, which include cats, kittens, dogs, puppies and small pets.

LCAS is extending Friday’s adoption hours to give adopters a chance to get a head start on the weekend with their new pet. Adoption hours on Friday, May 8th, will be 11AM - 8PM. Standard adoption hours will apply Saturday, May 9th, and Sunday, May 10th, 11AM - 6PM.

Adopters will receive a starter supply bag containing essential items to support their pet’s transition to a new home. In addition, all individuals adopting a dog or puppy during this event will receive free dog training classes at LCAS.

Prospective adopters can view available pets online at loudoun.gov/animals. The standard adoption screening process still applies during this promotion; most adoptions can be completed on the same day.

All dogs, cats, and rabbits adopted from LCAS are spayed or neutered and receive a microchip that is registered to their adopter.

Next Household Hazardous Waste Event in One Loudoun - May 9

The next Loudoun County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) collection event is scheduled for Saturday, May 9, 2026, 8:30AM - 2:30PM, at the One Loudoun Park and Ride (20360 Savin Hill Drive in Ashburn). Loudoun residents are welcome to bring HHW from their homes to the event, free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to use the intersection at Savin Hill Drive and Russell Branch Parkway next to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Ashburn Station to reduce event traffic through the adjacent residential neighborhood.

Event Procedures

Because of safety concerns related to the handling of various types of hazardous materials, the events feature a drive-through process in which residents are instructed to remain in their vehicles and allow event staff to unload any items accepted for disposal. To ensure everyone remains in their vehicle while at the point of service, items must not be in sealed or tied plastic bags. Staff are not allowed to open any plastic bag containing HHW.

5th Annual PRCS Food Truck Festival - May 9

Experience a day filled with food, fun and games with Loudoun County Parks, Recreation and Community Services (PRCS) at the fifth annual PRCS Food Truck Festival. Enjoy a variety of activities, regional food vendors, and resources available in Loudoun County, offering something for everyone in the family.

The PRCS Food Truck Festival combines incredible food and entertainment and will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, from 11AM - 3PM at the Segra Field Parking lot in Leesburg. The family-friendly event will feature over 15 food vendors, beverages for all ages, retail vendors, as well as live music from local musicians. Activities include axe throwing, a splatter paint and rage room, and scavenger hunting.

All attendees should use the main entrance of Philip A. Bolen Memorial Park, located at 42405 Claudia Drive, in Leesburg, and follow the signage to the designated parking areas at Segra Field.

Admission to the PRCS Food Truck Festival is free and open to the public. All food vendors will be responsible for selling their own products. Please remember that attendees cannot bring their own food or drink, except for capped, clear water bottles.

This event will be hosted rain or shine. In the case of severe weather, a cancellation notice will be posted on the Loudoun PRCS Facebook page.

LCPL Annual Food Drive for Loudoun Hunger Relief

The 2026 Food Drive is happening now! From May 2-10, donate healthy, shelf-stable foods at any of Loudoun County Public Library's 10 branches. Visit the link here for a list of suggested items to donate.

All food items will go to Loudoun Hunger Relief for distribution to community members in need. Over the years, these annual food drives have collected enough food for 38,286 meals. Help them grow this number by participating in th food drive and sharing this information to let your neighbors know how they can pitch in, too!

Bike to Work Day - May 15

Registration is open for Bike to Work Day 2026! Organized regionally by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association, Bike to Work Day celebrates bicycle commuting as a viable alternative to driving alone. New and experienced cyclists are welcome to take part in this fun, free event.

Loudoun County Transit and Commuter Services will host two local pit stop celebrations from 6:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. on Friday, May 15, 2026.

Leesburg Pit Stop — 215 Depot Court SE, Leesburg

(This is a new location in The Building People parking area.)

Sterling Pit Stop — 183 Ruritan Road, Sterling

(This location remains in the Sterling Ruritan Club parking area.)

To register, complete this online form and choose the pit stop where you will pick up a free T-shirt. Participants are welcome to visit any pit stops throughout the region. Plan to take part and enjoy free refreshments, giveaways and the camaraderie that makes Bike to Work Day an annual tradition!

Join me at the Sterling Pit Stop at 7:30AM for the reading of the Bike to Work Day Proclamation. I also hope you participate with me at 8AM as I ride into Leesburg!

SAVE THE DATE: Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy Peterson Young Naturalist Program Awards Celebration - May 31

Children spend just 4-7 minutes a day in unstructured outdoor play compared to more than seven hours in front of screens, according to the National Recreation and Park Association. The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy is working to reverse that trend in Loudoun County through its Peterson Young Naturalist Program, and on Sunday, May 31st from 2PM - 4PM, at Cardinal Ridge Elementary School, you’re invited to join as they celebrate the students and teachers leading the way!

Loudoun Wildlife’s Peterson Young Naturalist Program is a partnership with Loudoun County Public Schools that trains K-12 educators to incorporate nature-based learning and nature journaling into their classroom curriculum.

Peterson lessons are aligned with state Standards of Learning and help students learn science, math, English, and other skills through outdoor-based lessons and activities. Throughout the year, students also document their observations and reflections in personal nature journals. Standout journals are selected for recognition across grade levels, and those winners (and their teachers) will be honored at the Peterson Awards Celebration.

The May 31 celebration will feature a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere, beginning with a half-hour social time where attendees can explore student nature journals and interactive demonstrations from some of Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy’s community science programs. The event will also include a keynote presentation by Dr. Mojisola Adejumo, principal of Cardinal Ridge Elementary School. Additional highlights include a live presentation from NOVA Parks Roving Naturalist Matt Felperin, who will introduce attendees to a variety of wildlife ambassadors, including Smoke the Screech Owl, a local favorite.

Students recognized at the event will receive cash awards, while their teachers will be provided with classroom supplies to support continued nature-based learning. Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy hopes the Peterson Young Naturalist Program — and celebrations like this one — will inspire more families, schools, and communities to embrace the program’s guiding message: More Green, Less Screen!
