Save the Date! Attainable Housing Town Hall on September 24th at 6pm

Join us for a productive and informative Town Hall on Attainable Housing on Tuesday, September 24th at 6pm at Cascades Senior Center (21060 Whitfield Pl, Sterling, VA 20165).

This town hall will feature a discussion on the state of housing in Loudoun County, including current county programs, and exploring the opportunities and challenges of building attainable housing. I am hosting this event featuring an expert panel:

  • Brian Reagan, Assistant Director of the County Dept. of Housing & Community Development
  • Benjamin Miller, Co-Founder & Partner of Wellington Development Partners
  • Jill Norcross, Executive Director of Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance (NVAHA)

The event is free and open to the public; no pre-registration required. You can stay up to date by clicking interested on the Facebook event page here.

Route 7 Brewing Grand Opening Celebration

Congratulations to Route 7 Brewing on their soft opening! I can't wait to join them at their Grand Opening & Ribbon Cutting celebration on Friday, September 13th at 12pm. This small business is owned and operated by a local Loudoun County resident! I hope others in the community can attend as we celebrate one of the latest businesses and the first brewery to open in the Algonkian district.

Check out their Facebook event here.

Cascades Marketplace Project Update

Today, Delegate Atoosa Reaser joined me to meet with the development team at Stanley Martin to get an update on the Cascades Marketplace revitalization project! Right now, they are in the early stages of approval for the site plan, with hopes to begin demolition of the closed up retail space in July 2025. After that, they hope to begin construction of the first apartment homes in December 2025.

This project is a long time coming and I'm excited to see the plan coming to life. Thank you to Stanley Martin's team for taking the time to walk me through the blueprints of the 180 townhome and two-over-two condo units that are being planned in the space. The new housing will support the exciting new retail tenants coming to the marketplace!

One Loudoun Glass Recycling Center

Ribbon Cutting Event

I joined some of my fellow Board of Supervisors on Tuesday to celebrate the grand opening of the new One Loudoun Glass Recycling Center! With the Sterling Park Recycling Center closing on September 29th, this new glass recycling center couldn't come at a better time. Congratulations to Broad Run District Supervisor Sylvia Glass and our awesome County staff for their hard work on this initiative!

This facility only accepts glass bottles and jars; check out the guidelines here to make sure you're recycling properly.

Washington Spirit Reception at the Kennedy Center

When I root, I root for the Spirit! It was an honor to attend a reception last week hosted by the Washington Spirit, our region's premier women's soccer team, to welcome five-time NBA champion Magic Johnson to the team's investor group. Magic's investment continues the accelerating momentum for women's sports we are seeing across the nation. Four of Washington Spirit's players, including Croix Bethune, Hal Hershfelt, Casey Krueger, and Trinity Rodman, were members of the U.S. Women's National Team (USWNT) that took home the Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Additionally, the team has set a new record this season, winning 13 matches so far - the most in a single season in the team's history!

I am so proud of these women and this team. The culture of excellence in athletics the Spirit exemplify are benefit to the entire DC region. The next home match is this Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Audi Field in Washington, DC. Get your tickets here.

Loudoun County Courthouse Renamed After Civil Rights Lawyer Charles Hamilton Houston

I was honored to join community members and other elected officials to commemorate the renaming of Loudoun County's historic 1895 courthouse in honor of civil rights attorney Charles Hamilton Houston on Monday.

Dean of Howard University Law School and legal counsel to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Houston was the nation’s foremost African American attorney from the 1930s until his death in 1950. During the historic 1933 trial of George Crawford in Loudoun County, he led the first all-black legal team in a major case in a southern courthouse.

Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month!

September 15th - October 15th

Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th - October 15th! One way to celebrate the history and rich culture of all Hispanics and Latinos living in Loudoun County and across the world is at the Sterling Community Center’s annual Pueblo Unido Day.

Pueblo Unido Day is a free festival hosting local businesses, and nonprofit and commercial vendors and features family-friendly activities including a petting zoo and moon bounces. Immerse yourself in the cultures of the Hispanic and Latino communities with food trucks selling delicious traditional foods, lively music, and dance performances.

For more information, check out the event here.

Visit to the National Botanic Garden in Chantilly

This week I took part of a tour of the National Botanic Garden in Chantilly, where owners Peter and Beata Knop have worked over the years to create acres of constructed garden and mountain out of reclaimed material. This privately-owned garden is off the beaten path and is meant to be a blend of art and nature in a scenic retreat, and features America's largest bamboo garden along a 50-island maze. Given my office's work on a new ordinance to put commonsense regulations on the planting and upkeep of bamboo, this was an informative visit to learn about how they maintain their incredible bamboo garden!

I appreciate the owners taking the time to drive us through the garden, see the planned work in progress, and allowing us to see the overlooking views of Loudoun from the top of Knop Mountain.
