Hunting for "Gold" in Hartford
There's gold in them thar hills, says the Hartford Salamander Team... Join this search for Cantharellus Cibarius, better known as the Golden Chanterelle. The most famous of edible species, it's often found around oaks. (Warning: Do not eat any wild mushroom unless it has been examined by a mycologist, i.e. mushroom expert.) When not out hunting fungi, the Salamander Team trains volunteers to limit frog and salamander roadkill during spring migrations. Learn how to help here.

A Clean, Green Altar
Chuck Collins, author of the novel Altar to an Erupting Sun, called for a "tribunal" to investigate oil companies at his Norwich Bookstore reading. His book tells the story of an activist who kidnaps a fossil fuels executive. "The legitimacy of violence as a tactic is a problem," says the Guilford, VT, author. "I try to show in the story just how harmful that is." Retired Yale Forestry professor Gus Speth, a cofounder of the Natural Resources Defense Council, introduced Collins.
