The heatwave has come and gone, and now we are finally able to get into the Autumnal spirit. And when it comes to wines that suit the first chills of the season, you cannot go wrong with exploring the region of Alsace. The white wines have a signature roundness and weight that make them a shoo-in pairing for heavier Fall dishes.
This region of NE France borders Germany, and has been heavily influenced by wars — the territory has been frequently passed back and forth across the French-German border. French is the official language today, but German is taught in schools as well, the proximity making it a necessity. It's not uncommon for one family to have 3 generations with different primary languages: German, Alsatian and French.
Alsace is a gastronomic capitol of the world, with 26 Michelin-starred restaurants, and it's national ambiguity is certainly part of that. You will find the best of German and French cuisines while exploring the half-timbered architecture of this story book region. Today, we explore the must-try wines of Alsace!

Failla Cellar Event
Thursday, October 19th

|
|
Join us in our cellar for an unforgettable wine tasting with Cat Fairchild of the iconic, cool climate, Sonoma winery Failla.
"Simply put, Failla is a reference point winery for the Sonoma Coast. This is as good as it gets."
-Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media.
|
|
Failla is the project of winemaker Ehren Jordan, focusing on cool climate sites in the Sonoma Coast and world class vineyards in Oregon. Ehren's worked his way up the vertical integration ladder for wineries such as Joseph Phelps, Turley, Neyers, and at Jean-Luc Colombo's Cornas winery "Les Ruchets". Ehren started Failla in 1998 and later Day Zinfandel in 2011. He has paved an influential path in winemaking with his long resume of notable winemaking and viticulture jobs, leading to the honor of Winemaker of the Year in 2008 and continual high scores from critics.

Since Failla's first vintage, Ehren Jordan has made exceptional wines using biodynamic practices. Today, Failla has 11 acres of estate vines and has steadily acquired key vineyard sources from the Occidental Ridge, Hirsch, Peay, Savoy, and Platt Vineyards. More recently, Failla has been expanding north to Oregon, where they are now getting fruit from the Seven Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills of the WIllamette Valley. They have also purchased an Oregon winery, Patton Valley Vineyards in Gaston, as well as 30 acres of vineyard land in the Laurelwood District on sandy, windblown basalt soils.

Terroir
Nestled between the Rhine River and Vosges Mountains lies Alsace, a patchwork quilt of ancient soils. There are over a dozen distinctive soil types, including granite, limestone, volcanic, and sandstone. Each soil creates a different story, optimal for different grape varietals. The Vosges Mountains block the patterns of maritime weather, making Alsace one of the sunniest, driest regions in France. Couple that with cool nights, and you create wines with optimal ripeness balanced by brilliant acidity. The wines of Alsace are all about their aromatics, so it's uncommon to find influence of oak.
|
|
|
|
Varietals
90% of production in Alsace is to white wine, with Pinot Noir comprising the last 10%. "Noble Varietals" are Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat — and these are the only varietals permitted in in the 51 Grand Crus of Alsace. There is also a large amount of Pinot Blanc, Sylvaner, and Muscat grown in the region as well. The fastest growing AOC of production is Crémant d’Alsace, which makes up 22% of total production.
|
|
Gewürztraminer
If Gewürztraminer were available as a Yankee Candle, it would be a best seller. Aromatics of lychee, mandarin orange, rose petals, ginger, and spice jump out of a glass of Alsatian Gewürztraminer. Food pairings can be spicy, fruity, rich, or aromatic. Duck curry, savory quiche, Thanksgiving dinner, Sichuan stir fry, and even Waldorf salad are perfectly suited for this versatile wine. The relatively tame levels of acidity let you go wild with spices, without aggravating your palate. Our favorite right now is the Domaine Weinbach Gewürztraminer made from 40-50 year old vines from the “Wolfreben” lieu-dit, located in the Kaysersberg Valley. Biodynamically grown in soils of sand silt on granite pebbles, this wine is complex with a powerful concentration.

Riesling
If you enjoy dry (trocken) German Riesling, and want to branch out — grab some Alsatian Riesling. Alsace creates Riesling that is also aromatic and expressive with high acidity and steely minerality, but with more florality and a creamier texture because of the warmer and drier climate. Because of it's fuller body, Alsatian Riesling makes an excellent pairing for heavier dishes such as Choucroute (Alsatian dish of sauerkraut, sausages, and potatoes), onion tarts, roasted pork belly, or Pad Thai. We can't get enough of the Barmès-Buecher Clos Sand Riesling, marked by its great focus, nuance and acidity. Clos Sand is a biodynamically farmed vineyard situated near the top of the Grand Cru Steingrübler.

Edelzwicker
The blending of white varietals is a common practice in Alsace. The term 'Edelzwicker' translates as the blending of noble varietals, and if labled 'Gentil' than it must contain at least 50% Noble Varietals (Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris and Muscat). The Albert Boxler Edelzwicker is perhaps the most harmonious blend you'll come across. This masterpiece of a wine comes from Albert Boxler, a domaine established in 1673 in the ancient village of Niedermorschwihr in the Haut-Rhin. This Edelzwicker is floral, luscious, and medium bodied. It is perfectly paired with soufflé, grilled vegetables, and spicy cuisines such as Chinese, Thai, or Indian.

Cocktail of the Week: Angostura Cocktail
The Angostura Sour is an acquired taste and a personal favorite. It is one of the only cocktails that uses bitters as the only alcohol in it. So if you hate bitters this cocktail might not be for you. You can adjust the amount of Demerara to adjust the sweetness to your taste. The egg white in the cocktail gives it a frothy creamy texture. So good.
|
|
|
Ingredients:
1.5oz Angostura Aromatic Bitters
.75oz Fresh Lemon Juice
1oz Demerara Syrup
1 Egg White
Instructions:
Add all ingredients into a shaker. Dry shake really hard without ice. Then add ice and shake it really hard again. Strain into a cocktail glass.
Cheers,
Nikola

Staff Picks - What to Drink this Week
Try these special, staff-selected libations!
2022 Colori wines White Blend - $22.99
Summer seems to be ending but that is fine by me. New to the shop this skin contact wine feels like Autumn breezes in a bottle. An aromatic blend of Malvasia Bianco, Pinot Bianco and Pinot Grigio that spends 18 hours on the skins giving it a pretty, peachy hue is an absolute delight. Tropical notes of passion fruit and guava from the Malvasia are rounded out by citrus and stone fruits from the Pinots with a mineral backbone. This bottle is a floral stunner!
-Angie
2020 Domaine du Grand Montmirail Vacqueyras - $28.99
This is one of the best Southern Rhone reds the wine team has enjoyed in a while. The cepage is 65% Grenache, 25% Syrah, and 10% Mourvedre. The nose shows notes of cardamom and red berry fruit and the medium plus palate delivers rich black cherry fruit with a licorice finish. It is the perfect fall red to have with an old-fashioned beef stew or some garlic and rosemary grilled lamb chops.
-Rob
2021 Ovum 'Off the Grid' Riesling, Cedar Ranch Vineyard, Southern Oregon - $27.99
Closer to Northern California's Redwoods than Oregon's famous Willamette Valley, Ovum owners and winemakers Ksenia and John House make this Riesling from grapes grown "Off the Grid" in Cedar Ranch Vineyard, near Cave Junction, in the forested and foggy Southern Oregon region of the Illinois Valley. With the philosophy of nothing added and nothing taken away, they guide the fruit to best express the terroir. The 2021 harvest was 5 days earlier than usual so as to boost acidity and avoid too much botrytis. Native yeast fermentation was done in concrete eggs to a dry 13.5% alcohol. But, with a little skin contact, a bit of must exposed to oxygen, and aging in Acacia and Austrian oak barrels, the result is a stunning white wine of rich layered complexity. It starts with hints of lemon blossom, thyme, and wet rock and then opens up beautifully to fully ripe peach, apricot, nectarine, and brown sugar. For a unique American Riesling experience, you need to go here.

2016 Malat Pinot Noir Classic Furth-Palt, Niederosterreich - $29.99
This lovely Austrian Pinot is made in a classic style. Potent aromas of cherry and spice prevail. The palette is dominated by a plush silky texture that never feels heavy. The finish, although slightly compact, has plenty more fruit and spice and the well integrated acidity is holding firm, keeping the overall package fresh and refreshing. This fairly modest wine is spontaneously fermented in stainless steel, aged in old oak and, at seven years old, seems to be in a real sweet spot. Gobble it up while you can.
-Dave
Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue - $13.99
Nearly every brewery out there has some kind of IPA available, but a brewery that has a quality *pale ale* is a fair bit more rare. Pseudo Sue by Toppling Goliath is the pinnacle of those pale ales. Citra hops give Pseudo Sue a solid hop character without the potentially overbearing hoppiness of an IPA. If you've ever wanted to get into hoppy beers, Pseudo Sue is an excellent stepping stone.
