Hello, March!

Happy March!

Spring is coming, I promise you that! That said, this time around, I honor the commitment I made last month - a topic that I'm constantly asked about - BOOKMARKS! What they are, why they're helpful, and how to manage them. Plus, more monkey business you receive via email, and this month's quick tip. All part of my nifty newsletter that hits your inbox the first day of the month, no matter what day of the week (or holiday) it is - all with the goal of streamlining your tech life and making you more knowledgeable and productive.

Stay warm, and see you on April 1st. Talk soon.

All About Bookmarks...

Last month, we discussed a bad habit that some people have when it comes to surfing the web. (Having a brain freeze? Find it here.) I also predicted that this month’s newsletter would have a section on bookmarks, so here we go!

So, what are bookmarks, and why are they good to use?

Similar to a physical bookmark (which marks a place in a book for future reference), a browser bookmark is a place holder for a web page, typically one that you reference often, saving time and the potential peril of mistyping the URL and ending up on a "bad" site.

And the good news is, that no matter what browser you use, whether it’s one of the name brands (Chrome, Safari, Firefox), a member of the JV team (Opera, Brave, Edge), or those on the lunatic fringe (Tor, Epic, Ghostery), you have the ability to create (and edit) bookmarks.

They're Not Here, They're Not Coming!

“Just because you’re paranoid, doesn’t mean they aren’t out to get you!”

Not a week goes by without a client contacting me about an email, web page, or some other point of contact that doesn't seem right. Luckily, we seem to be past that robocall "IRS/Social Security/Windows Virus" trend that was so prevalent a few years back, but now we're in the age of email fraud. (Once again, I'm avoiding the "S" word, as some email servers block messages containing that word.)

It's OK to be paranoid when it comes to emails like the one pictured on the right. While it does have some legitimate attributes, it's a fake.

The tell? Look at the "To" and "From" fields. Dead giveaway. But the real clue is the sense of urgency. The CTA to act quickly. "Take Action!." [sic]

These crooks are playing on your emotions to get you to make a snap decision. Similar to the IRS robocalls of yesteryear, these people paint a dire picture if you don't do something about it. Immediately.

So ignore it. Delete it. And certainly don't click any links. Especially the "Unsubscribe" link. They're not here, they're not coming. After you, your data, or anything else. So get on with your productive day.

🔥 Remember - if you think it's a sc@m, it probably is.

March's Quick Tip!

Quick Tip

Speaking of robocalls, they're still out there. While those "extended car warranty" and "health coverage" calls seem as far in the rearview mirror as "The Arsenio Hall Show," they're still a thing, albeit a much less intrusive one.

While there ARE options to block them, some are over zealous in their pursuit to kick these obnoxious calls to the curb. On that Optimum suggests is "NOMOROBO."

While a good idea in theory, word on the street is that it's not a perfect solution (like many of Optimum's offerings), blocking some legitimate calls while allowing some unwanted calls to slip through the cracks.

While this example applies to Optimum phone service, there are similar programs that allow you to block unwanted calls. The best way to deal with them is to mess around with the settings, and see what works best for you. Me, I've enabled the AT&T version of this, and it seems to work, and not blocking any legit calls. However, since the number or robocalls lately has diminished, I'm not totally sure that this blocking program is necessary.

Pay Attention To These!

Happenings in the Apple and tech world that could possibly impact you!

If you haven't heard yet, Apple has ditched its electric car initiative, even after a decade and a reported $10 billion (yes, that's billion with a "B") poured into the venture. Read about it here.

 Me.com? Apple ID? iCloud? Not only is this differentiation confusing, there may be another name for the same service. Check it out here!

Look for an update in Apple's iPad line later this month. Which means there will be bargains galore of legacy models. Find out the deets here.

Flashback Dept.

Here's what got me started in this entire mess - the infamous MacWarehouse catalog and my rookie card - from my first job in the industry, a couple of light years ago. Not the worst company I ever worked for, but certainly not the best! I was one of many who dialed and smiled their way through the 9-5 and yet, survived to move on to bigger and better things. The blonde woman on the cover of the magazine? That's Kerry! She was legendary, but long gone by the time I climbed on board. (Don't bother calling the number on the card - the company is nothing but a memory, and I won't be there to answer the phone...) Those were the days!

What's On The Horizon For April...

I DID attend a demo of Apple's new Vision Pro headset. Look for that as the lead story in April's newsletter, as well as my blog!
