Introducing The Green Lantern,
All-American Comics #16, published in 1940 near the start of the Golden Age of comic books, is hands down the most elusive of all the top books in our hobby. The importance, longevity and popularity of Green Lantern combine with extreme rarity to rank this comic book within the
Top 5 most valuable Golden Age comic books in the world. In fact it officially ranks as
#4 on the
Top 100 Golden Age Comics List within the
The Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide, and has the honor of being sandwiched between
Superman #1 (at #3) and
Batman #1 (at #5).
All-American Comics #16 is rarest of the Top 5 by a steep margin There are
only 24 CGC-certified unrestored, Universal examples and for the collector trying to build the best collection of Golden Age comic books, the choices are very limited. Obtaining any example is difficult, let alone an ultra rare higher grade specimen. The offered example is
1 of a mere 3 unrestored examples certified at 6.5, and just two "freak-of-nature" pedigree examples have certified higher--the 8.0 Billy Wright and the 9.4 Mile High. The most recent 6.5 sale occurred over a year-and-a-half ago (two price guides ago in comic book terms) in February of 2018 when a different example sold for just above $215,000. The particular example offered here actually has positive attributes that set it apart from the two other 6.5s, namely that the front and back covers and the interior are free from significant visual detractors such as major staining, long creasing, large pieces missing or marker blemishes, and this example is also structurally sound, without a single popped staple. Overall, we think it is the most desirable of the three 6.5s.
With the purchase of this item, one elite collector has a chance to procure
one of the Top 5 examples of one of the Top 5 Golden Age Comics in our hobby--a superior example of the rare issue that brought us the origin and first appearance of one of the most enduring characters in all of pop culture. Though ever popular, with the Green Lantern movie slated for July of next year, we expect that the franchise will receive an enormous popularity boost in the near future. And we are finally relieved to see that DC is doing it right, as evidenced by the string of recent cinematic successes including
Wonder Woman,
Aquaman, and though we never thought we'd say it--
Shazam!
