A Note from Father Tommy+
Dear friends,
This Sunday's Gospel story is a vibrant one, filled with imagery of boats setting out, nets being cast, and hands straining under the weight of an abundant catch. Yet, beneath this outward activity lies a deeper message: Jesus' invitation to embrace a new way of life.
Consider Simon and his fellow fishermen—weary, disheartened, and empty-handed after a fruitless night of hard labor. Jesus' response is extraordinary. He doesn't start with a lecture or a theological debate; he steps into their boat. He meets them in their exhaustion and disappointment.
We live in a world that often demands much from people without acknowledging their weariness—a world that treats some as disposable and measures their worth solely by productivity, all while ignoring the exhaustion of those simply trying to make ends meet. Jesus doesn't ignore it. He sees their long night, understands their struggle, and honors their labor—not by pitying them, but by inviting them into something more.
In a world that often devalues workers—those who fish the waters, stock the shelves, clean the streets, care for the sick—this moment reminds us that Jesus steps into the boats of the weary and lifts them up. Then comes the challenge: "Put out into the deep and let down your nets for a catch." I invite you to step into the deep with me this week.
As always I hope you’ll be able to join us for in-person worship at 8:30 or 10:30 if you’re able, or online if you have to be away.
May the blessings of God be upon you.
-Father Tommy+
