Unceasing Prayer, September 7, 2021

“Our minds are always active. Do we have to become victims of our unceasing thought? No, we can convert our unceasing thinking into unceasing prayer by making our inner monologue into a continuing dialogue with our God, who is the source of all love.”
- Henri Nouwen in Bread for the Journey (HarperSanFrancisco, 1997)

The book to turn to first, to understand unceasing prayer is Practicing the Presence of God. It is a very small collection of the teachings and experiences of Brother Lawrence, a French Carmelite monk who was the cook for his community in Paris in the 17th century. Father Joseph Beaufort compiled the book from letters and four conversations with Brother Lawrence, as he described his walk with God—not from the head, but within his heart.

He saw God in every aspect, in every second of his life as he washed pots and pans, purchased wine, or cooked the meals—continually conversing with God. He never became weary of doing insignificant things for the love of God—believing that intervals of prayer should not differ from other times; seeing God as a friend he would not want to be estranged from; feeling God’s presence more acutely in sickness than in good health.

My favorite fictional role model for continually being in conversation with God is Tevye in the 1971 American dramatic musical, Fiddler on the Roof.

I try to watch the movie several times a year and go to see the play whenever it comes close to Little Rock. It is long but so worth journeying with Tevye in his persistent conversations with God through a journey of love and many trials.

From the Rector
Dear All Saints Family,

I share The Rev. Dr. Joanna Seibert's reflection from yesterday as she illuminates both Brother Lawrence, a flesh-and-blood monk from ages past, and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof. Indeed these two figures show us how to make the ordinary acts of our days an ongoing prayer and spiritual practice. Thank you Joanna!!!! I commend her daily meditations to you and came upon them by way of the many saints in our parish who subscribe, as I do now.

I also commend the plentitude of good works described in this email. I look forward to my first OBX Pridefest this Saturday and to resuming Godly Play for children at the 10:30 hour this coming Sunday. Another blessing will flow from our marvelous choir and choirmaster as they resume choral anthems this Sunday!!!! How long has it been...... An ice cream social following the late service will be a tasty finale to our first "fall" Lord's Day.

Blessings to you in all acts great and small, praying without ceasing.

Love, Rev. Cindy

Children's Godly Play Resumes!
Sunday, September 12th, 10:30 am
All Saints Episcopal Church in Southern Shores invites children ages 4 through 5th grade to a Sunday morning faith-building experience called: * Godly Play *

Based on the Montessori method, Godly Play uses scripture stories, engaging and interactive story figures, and creative activities to encourage children to seek and find their own answers to faith questions. The children gather for stories with their teachers for approximately 45 minutes while their parents are in worship and meet weekly through December. Everyone wears a mask and the teachers practice healthy distancing in the classroom.

Come see this wonderful way of nurturing children's faith and consider making it part of your child's spiritual growth!

Adult Education and Spirituality Events
The ministry of the Adult Education and Spirituality Committee (AESC) is to assist pastoral leadership in meeting the individual, small group, and community adult education and spirituality needs to the best of its ability.  By conducting occasional surveys and keeping close contact with parishioners, vestry members, and members of other committees, the AESC will meet those needs through both in-person and on-line experiences.

The AESC met recently to set its programming agenda for the 2021-22 "year."

Forums: The committee will seek to host "Forums" on at least a quarterly basis, and has scheduled the first of these events for Sunday, September 19th between the two worship services. The purpose of the Forum will be to assess the educational and/or spiritual needs that parishioners have as regards Bible Study (the Church's most important text).  Please put the event on your calendar.

Holly Days Postponed Until 2022
We are very grateful for your ongoing support of the Holly Days event at All Saints'! However, due to the recent serge of the Covid-19 Variant and the population it is affecting, namely children and vaccinated and un-vaccinated alike, the Committee and All Saints’ Vestry have decided that it would be in the best interest of our church, its volunteers, the vendors, and our customers, to cancel this event this year.

All deposit checks that have been received by the church for this year’s anticipated event will be destroyed. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us: hollydaysfestival@gmail.com

We appreciate your interest in our event and we pray that we will be able to conduct our Annual Holly Days Bazaar & Arts Festival next year in 2022 like usual. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience to you for the decision to cancel Holly Days this year!

OBX Plastic Bag Recycling Project
Hi, I’m Jo Williams, a member of the Outer Banks Woman’s Club. We are collecting plastic grocery/store bags to be recycled by TREX Company during June-December, 2021. The bags can be deposited in designated receptacles at the following locations: YMCA (3000 S. Croatan Highway, Nags Head), Baum Center (309 Mustian Street, KDH), Joe Lamb Realty (4607 N. Croatan Highway, Kitty Hawk)
At the end of the collection period, TREX will recycle the bags into a bench that will be located in the OBX community. All plastic bags need to be clean, dry, and free of food residue. Flattening the bags before placing in receptacle is also helpful. Thank you for your support of our recycling project!
