WINCO answers the call with hurricane-resistant windows for the IYRS School of Technology & Trades
Challenge
The International Yacht Restoration School (IYRS) School of Technology & Trades was first built in 1903 as Newport, Rhode Island’s first electric generating plant. Its 18,000 sq. ft. Restoration Hall was converted for building and restoring boats in the 1990s. By the next decade, it was obvious the windows needed to be replaced, but funding was a tough hurdle to overcome. Then building codes changed, requiring hurricane-rated windows. Throughout the years, IYRS, Hareld Glass, and WINCO through True Enterprises worked together to restore the beautiful building to its former glory while making it a safer environment for students and staff.
Solution
Returning Restoration Hall to its golden age required planning. The old window frames were rusted, the concrete sills crumbling, and the brick walls supporting the frames were in poor condition. For the retrofit, WINCO Series 1450S Hung Replicasrecreate the originals — right down to the light green finish by Linetec. All windows have hurricane-rated laminated glass (including the arches capping each oversized window) that meets ASTM 1886/1996 codes. The light green trim was carried over to the trim at the roofline to cap off the look!
